I have an iMac operating on OS X 10.15.2 . Catalina. I have launched iTunes and have selected a music track I would like to listen to, before I actually purchase i. , But, I receive a notification asking whether or not I want three months Free a or pay $9.99 month. Can I no longer preview a track before buying it and do I really have to pay 9.99 just to buy a track? I know iTunes has changed but is this what I have to deal with?

They still advertise previews:

https://music.apple.com/us/genre/music-rock-rock-roll/id1157
"Open iTunes to preview, buy, and download songs from these genres."

You might want to call them be sure.

per the link you provided https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8295042

"You need to use the iTunes Store app if you want to preview and/or buy and download music, not the Music app (that only lets you use Apple Music, not access iTunes Store music ; if you don't want Apple Music to show you can turn it off via Settings > Music)"

The icon I have for iTunes has changed to the Music App after upgrading to Catalina. I am having difficulty locating where to turn off Apple Music and when I search the App Store for the iTunes Store App, the response was iTunes can not be found. What am I doing wrong? Could you explain?

On Mac: Hide Apple Music Access or Change the Apple Music Subscription Plan
macOS Catalina or Latest macOS has a new Music app to manage music and Subscription settings. In the same way, we can hide apple music on the Mac music app. Or Cancel the Apple Music Subscription plan also. Follow the below steps on How to hide apple music on the Music mac app without stopping the apple music plan. Next is, How to Cancel Apple Music Subscription plan from the Mac Music app.

Hide Apple Music from Mac Music app
Open Music App on mac.
From top music Menu, Go to Music > Preferences.
Next, Under the Restrictions Tab, Under the Disable Section – Select Apple Music checkbox.
Tap on Done to save it.
Turn off or cancel Apple Music Subscription on Mac
Open Music App on mac.
From to music menu, Go to Account > View my Account…
View Apple Music Account on Mac on Music App
View Apple Music Account on Mac on Music App
Scroll to last and See the Subscriptions Manage option.
Manage Apple Music Subscription on Mac music app
Manage Apple Music Subscription on Mac music app
See all subscriptions option in a list, Find the Apple Music Subscriptions and Click on the Edit button to make changes.

Apple Music
I think once the iTunes Store option is toggled the preview functions as it once did. Look At ‘Buy or download an individual item‘ steps 1-3.

Not possible unless you have hacked your system (if you did, it helps to mention that). iTunes does not exist in Catalina. Most features still exist as individual applications but Apple re-named the components. Of course in their typical Apple way they did not give them new and unique names and it can be very easy to confuse them with identically named components on other systems. Note the Apple document for which a link was posted pre-dates Catalina which is the version you say you are running. Plus, from reading that linked document I get the impression the person may have been asking about what to do on a device running iOS. Anyway, I am getting confused here and with anything iTunes and recent system versions one needs to be very careful to make sure solutions correspond to the system version you are running.

Just to clarify my post (3 up) ...

My link is to 'Apple Music' instructions when using Catalina. Yep, itunes no longer exists as it has been broken into smaller pieces covering individual components. Probably good considering itunes was a behemoth. The 'itunes store' still exists though and can be toggled on from within the new Apple Music preferences. The instructions I linked to were intended to specifically address the method for previewing music one might want to consider for purchase on the itunes store using Apple Music on Catalina. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.

'Previewing' or probably more aptly 'auditioning' still works...I just did it. Steps 1-3 are what I followed.

I hope that serves to clarify.
