If I delete both internal drives on my other computer which has been backed up with TM. Can I then just add back the OS?
If so I would like a link to that info as I have not been able to find the specific info I want. Please!
Thanks

Why erase both at once?

Have you downloaded the 10.13.6 Installer?

https://itunes.apple.com/app/macos-high ... 4741?mt=12

If so, is it 19MB or 5GB?

Oh, or do you mean Restore just the OS from TM backup-?

That'd be difficult.

I was hoping for the latter. I will check tonight about Itunes download. I do not believe that was downloaded.

What other options do I have for getting high sierra. The computer was bought with El Capitan I believe then upgraded to high sierra. Online I can only find upgrades to High Sierra. Suggestions are much appreciated. Thank you!

Do you have another Mac with HS/10.13.x on it?

If so can you put this one in Target Disk Mode, connect the two, then clone HS over?

You can get Sierra using the following page on a Mac with a working App Store:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208202

However Sierra is only supported until 10.15 is released at the end of this year, so you may as well go with High Sierra.

You can also get High Sierra without the app store with macOS High Sierra Patcher. In the program go to the tools menu and select Download macOS High Sierra. http://dosdude1.com/highsierra/

My question then is how do I download High Sierra IF/after I erase the boot/vm disk?

I agree I do not need to erase both disks, just the VM?boot one. I need help in how to download High Sierra. If I can't boot up the computer. Download it to a disk on my older SL? Thanks again :)

Update:

I downloaded the installer to both the computer and to a flashdrive.

I am unable to erase the boot disk.......
Nothing seems to work. Replace the disk?? :whip: :bonk: :P I tried from the HD main, the vm and hellstrom itself. no go!!

Now I am wondering if I am better off replacing that HD with the 1TB I bought for backup. ( That is hoping I remember how  :bonk: :snail: ) I also have a 320GM older HD that I no longer use for backup. = same size as the one present.

I do wish I knew what on earth my son did to that computer! :whip: :fishsmack: :whip:

Seemingly not without HS on the drive???!!!

I thought I could open the installer on my other computer, but it is unsupported ( having SL 10.6.8) and F (my son) set up his computer so that I can't open it on his. only certified App stores are "allowed".

according to Apple support I can download HS from their server. The person I chatted with re the Virtual Machine. unfortunately did not respond to my questions regarding the VM. Mainly. If I do the :

"Option-Command-R after pressing the power button, holding it until I see the Apple logo or the ball". My concern, reasonable or not, is will it work (downloading from apple server) with this, to me unknown, setup.

I guess it all comes back to the fact that I can't make a bootable backup.

ie: 1: Find a way to make a bootable backup (by)
2: finding a way to convert APFS to FHS
3: Change the security settings. Which I did do, without any results. Dosdude is seemingly not certified.

A really dumb question: :bonk:  What do you mean by a workable App store. ( not familiar with the term)

Thanks again.

Only way to convert APFS to HFS+...

Boot problem Mac in Target Disk Mode, using other Mac Clone with CCC, likely V 3 or such, Use other Mac to Reformat the APFS drive that is in Target Disk Mode, clone back to the Problem Mac.

Not i n my experience

I looked up TDM. :?: will that work with 2 different OS
I have a bootable clone of the 10.6.8. with CCC v3 on it ( I can use that rather than my other computer?) Firewire 800 connection.

Admittedly I have never done this before, ever :bonk: And considering the VM split boot HD ?????

Thanks

Ah, bug in my thinking... 10.6.8 won't see any APFS volumes, sorry. :bonk:

Can you gat a 16 GB USB stick or drive, just made a Install macOS High Sierra Install image, but it's 10.63 GB * it'd take me days to upload it where you could get it.

I have 2X 128GB flashdrives

Apple says that I can download HS from their server online. which Would solve 1 problem. Starting fresh. Are there any other ways to make a bootable backup with APFS?

Remember that I am of the old DIY school and have never been one to make others make my decisions for me :bonk: Admittedly I am sorely disappointed in the direction Apple has chosen to go. Leaves us OLDer techies out of the game. :nothappy:

What happens with TM backup if you have a severe problem with your computer and you do need a bootable backup??

The worst thing for me is that TM will delete info when "IT" wants to whether I like it or not. So basically , to me, I am loosing control of what I WANT on my computer and what I don't want. Unless there is a way to bypass the deleting issue???

Hey, if there is another solution I am perfectly happy to listen and change my ways. Slowly maybe :snail:
Thanks again BDAqua.
your patience is commendable :) :coffee:

un-mounted drive
can't open drive
operation failed

Secretly :P I can mail you a flash drive and you can return it to me with the bill :P :classic-eek: :emphatic-eek: :snail:

That computer is almost useless to me the way it is and I do consider myself a Very Patient person. Not counting the frustrations :| :snail: :emphatic-eek: :classic-eek: :bonk:

Only thing I'd change about your ways is trusting Apple too much! :fishsmack:

Always keep a bootable clone or 2 of every OS. Watch out for 2022 when Macs come with A Series chips & only run iOS.

Try download the Installer & see if it's the Full 5.2 GB, no idea what OSX is required to make a bootable Installer though.

Any Mac users close by that could help... or are you out between the trees?

OK on the mailing if you have time that is

We'd need a later OS like 10.13.x to work on saving the data on that drive so we can reformat it.
