Lotsa' questions - figured I'd ask them all at once since they are related and determine what I do and when.
Sorry to be so wordy, but I want to get this all out at once.

I have backed-up the new iPhone to iCloud.
There's actually very few changes (except some settings) on the phone - contacts were imported on their own from the travel MBP running Mavs saved in iCloud but I didn't have to make it happen.

I read http://x704.net/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7978 and wonder if it applies to my situation as well - decided to start a new question just in case.

I've asked similar before, but now I'm ready to do it and am still puzzled and nervous (obviously).

Back-up Questions:
1. Can I do a back up of the iPhone (first time) to iTunes on the travel MBP by selecting "manually back up" then "back up now" and it'll do it?
EDIT - yes, I'm certain from reading that this is the way to go.

2. And then should I change it to automatically use iCloud until we go away and then shut off the iCloud backup option and just go with iTunes (we'll have the travel MBP with us)?
EDIT - I still don't know about this. Which to do regularly whilst home?

3. EDIT - obvious question I answered it for myself.

to be continued... please look here , thanks:

Mrs H
