Sits on option boot screen forever, but choosing any of 12 boot choices will get gray apple only then restart after 5 minutes.

Have reset pram,smc, etc...

Try creating a USB installation drive on another computer (from install os x el capitan or whatever) and see if it pops up in the boot picker (option menu). If it does, try picking it and see if it boots - though it does take a long time to boot off USB. Something is funny about that recovery partition OS (the installation media is just a recovery partition with installation files included), it always takes forever to boot.

Edit: Damn phone calls interruptin' my train of thought.

Well, some succsess, FWTDM & Repair Disk, no problems found, though no Rebuild Boot Caches as needed from DU/PPC/10.5.8, & trashing applesetupdone on a couple of partitions was able to boot from a couple of unhidden Restore Partitions & do some stuff, got spinning radian & progress bar but to blank gray screen, then not sure what all I did but could boot from 10.9.5, 10.10, & 10.11... UHHHG! :whip:

Am now forcing a reinstall of the 10.8.5 Combo to one of my 3 10.8.5 Drives using Pacifist...

If you have a spare 8GB flash drive I would build the installation media of your choice on it. From there you should be able to do whatever you need to do to in order to manipulate the volume(s) on the internal drive, caches, etc.

My PC stopped booting the other day and the only thing that saved me was that I had some recovery media that included my backup software. A restore later, voila, it was all better.

Finally have it in fwtdm again, thoughts on using DW 4.3 from ppc 10.5.8 to try repair to 10.8.5 drive?

It should be OK so long as your version of DiskWarrior is new enough to support 10.8. Since its a universal application PPC vs. Intel shouldn't be a huge deal, the logic should be the same on both architectures.

I upgraded to DW 5 not that long ago and it still supports PPC.

After DW I would try recreating the .AppleSetupDone file and see if that helps at all.

Setup Assistant crashed, which in my experience causes the boot process to basically get stuck.

Yikes. Sounds like some kind of hardware failure. Have you taken the glass off and dusted it recently? Even the new god-awful glued together iMacs need to be disassembled and dusted periodically.

Try unplugging it, holding the power button for a couple seconds, then plugging it back in. That's supposed to perform an SMC reset on iMacs.

Looks like some Firewire problem, certain FW drives or cables, or ???, will prevent any key recognition at boot up, other combos will cause gray screen boot, other combos a spinning wheel forever, or a reboot after 5 minutes.

Have booted several of the same drives fine by using USB2.

Before that I got a partially working 10.8.5 on the internal, but no Apple Apps work, no Sys Prefs, AppStore no Mail, etc., by using Pacifist to replace things from the 10.8.5 combo… which OSX said this drive doesn't support this version of OSX, which is what was already on it!?

I must have the MK installer somewhere, but cannot find it!

Ugh. There is that Firewire ground loop issue where the power lines in the Firewire cable can cause voltage differentials from devices to travel to the computer. I actually have a FW400 isolator cable that includes the data pins but excludes the power lines, but I never saw anything like it for FW800.

You could try shutting it down and blowing air in the reverse of airflow to try and dislodge dust. Usually air travels in at the bottom and out at the top, and I think the circular vent behind the stand is an exhaust. vacuums don't work so well on imacs since the entire bottom is the intake, so it just sucks in air from the rest of the intake instead of pulling the longer distance through the fan and ductwork. Path of least resistance and all that fun stuff.

Wish I was closer to you BD, I took apart a 27" iMac 2-3 weeks ago because it was overheating and crashing. 24s are easier because the screen isn't quite as unwieldy. It took me about 3 hours with a break in the middle because the dust filled the entire classroom with a haze that made it look foggy.

Thanks for the offer MB, quite nice of you. :)

The circle behind the stand is intake on mine, have blown dust out & in reverse got the gray smudges between the glass. :coffee:

Now, is there a way to thwart the OSX installer that refuses to install to my internal drive due to SMART errors, which happened years ago & hasn't gotten worse since, it was due to Apple's poor cooling, before I got MacsFan Control, just playing Civ5 would shut the Mac down from GPU heat… I'm pretty certain the drive is OK except for 2 Sectors it couldn't calibrate for in that extreme heat years ago. :(

Yeah, most iMacs suffer from that issue. I know a guy who had his screen replaced three times under warranty and his HD five times because the HD got cooked to death and the screen always developed noticeable defects in the shape of the HD underneath it.

Apple hasn't been running the fans fast enough to cool the system adequately since the G5. I ended up changing the entire fan profile on my G5 to get up to speed far faster and at lower temps. Stopped my temp issues. Though I just realized I haven't dusted it in at least 9 months, poor thing's probably clogged up.

Yeah… Apple… We don't care how long it lasts, as long as it's quiet & most can squeeze by the warranty period. :upset:

Now they're running the fans too slowly and gluing them shut so you can't clean them.

Disposable premium computers. Some people are just nutty.

I've been running this Late 2010 21.5 with the fans ramped up with SMC Fan (manually adjusting fan speeds according to temps shown in menubar), and a fan at the back since I got it. Praying that will keep it going.

I've probably mentioned this before, but I run my PCs fans at 100%. The six 140mm case fans aren't all that bad but I can hear the three video card fans pretty clearly. I think they're 92mm and thin which means they have to spin faster to move the same volume, which makes them noisier.

I just put on headphones and like magic I'm not bothered by them.
