Hardware Overview:

Model Name: eMac
Model Identifier: PowerMac6,4
Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
Processor Speed: 1.42 GHz
Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.9.2f1

Couple of months ago the power went off & on twice within 15 seconds & the screen never came back on, though the video card still works because Screen Sharing still works fine.

What might I be looking for if I ever get the chance to open it up?

Depending on what you can find out there, it may be cheaper to get a "dead" eMac that has a working monitor and swap the boards out so that your current board works with the working monitor. Those CRTs aren't exactly a user repairable item, and I'm not sure you really want to screw around near the flyback transformer in them as not discharging it properly before working on it pretty much guarantees a shock capable of killing you instantly. And they retain their charge for years.

Truth be told, you may be best off just pulling the HD from there if it has data you need to keep and getting any of the G4 or G5 towers on the cheap and sticking it in there. If you can screenshare and have an external drive you can connect, you could clone the internal drive to the external and then use it in any other G4/G5 Mac to boot from (the only time this won't work is if you have an eMac specific OS build, in which case you'd need to update the OS software first to a non-eMac specific build, but those were exceedingly rare and only occured with the OSes as they shipped with the machine).

If you have a spare G4/G5 tower to temporarily try the drive in, do that. If it boots, one of those units is your best bet.

I'd try pulling the PRAM battery and checking it with a multimeter. That'll take long enough for it to get a good solid purge of data and you'll know if the battery has run down.

If it is the physical display that's a dangerous game, the voltages involved aren't anything to trifle with.

You can screen share without a video card installed.

If this is the version with the Radeon 9600 try to re-flow the GPU with a heat gun.

The eMac was a horrible machine, our failure rate was nearly 100%.

Thanks all... this eMac is my second most reliable Mac ever, been going 24*7*365 for 13 years, crunching dnetc at the rate of 300 per day.

Hey, just remembered eMacs have some non-standard video connector on the side... anybody got one of those adapters?

My eMac 800 MHz & 1 GHz models both lost the Hrd Drives in under a year.

Is it this?

I have some adapters but I'm not sure which ones I have. I know I have HDMI but that probably won't do you any good. I'll check when I get to work tomorrow.

I think the eMac uses a mini-VGA, but I think the one in the photo above is a mini-DVI. I might still have a couple mini-VGA adapters, but no promises. I'll look around when I get home. If I do have any, you're welcome to them. I will certainly never use them myself.

Wow, sure enough, I've still got one. It even still has the little plastic protector covers on the connectors. I'm guessing it works. Shall I drop it in the mail?

Shipping will be $4.95, but I'll pay you $5.00 to take if off my hands to save me the future mental anguish of recycling it. I'll just drop your nickel in the box with the adapter.
