Hello,
I have an iMac G3 Rev D Lime that I am trying to restore back to what it was like new. I have a lot of it working but wanted to add OS X Panther to dual boot as well. Panther goes through the first path of the install but on reboot I get "panic (cpu 0): Unable to find driver for this platform: iMac". My hunch is that the logic board was replaced at some point but never registered with the serial number of the machine, which is causing the panic error message. Does anyone have the serializer for this generation? I tried using BBS v.3T106 but it send the machine into open firmware. I saw another post on here similar to mine and I'm hoping someone has the software to correct this.

Thanks!
Jeff

My memory of the original iMacs and OS X is that they needed a firmware update at one point in order to run a particular version of OS X (and later).

This typically manifested itself as a hardware freeze that required a complete motherboard reset (disconnect power & motherboard battery and then reset it over and over and over until one time out of 50 it boots) but I never tried with later versions of OS X so it's possible the newer versions just KP.

If you can boot Mac OS (9) you can find the serial number in system info or whatever that application was called. If its blank then at least you'll have an answer.

Re. firmware update, could be this is what you need. I remember having to do a firmware update on my G3 400/slot.

I did check the firmware and it is up to date.

I think the clue is the message about driver for "iMac". I think it's trying to find "iMac,1" which is what this machines real device name is and I think that gets assigned during the serial number setup.

Searching "panic (cpu 0): Unable to find driver for this platform: iMac" getting lots of hits with different proposed solutions, including bad RAM--but not seeing anything directly related to G3.

https://encrypted.google.com/search?q=panic+(cpu+0):+Unable+to+find+driver+for+this+platform:+iMac&ei=RubAWobEKYqrsAHriKOwAg&start=10&sa=N&biw=1576&bih=869

How did you install 10.3? Where did you get the 10.3 install from, and on what kind of media is it?

Perhaps you can explain what your thinking is that leads you to suspect a missing serial no. on a board that was replaced?

I have swapped RAM.

The 10.3 discs are the retail versions. Installed them on my Lombard without any issue.

When you go to Apple System Profiler in OS 9, it doesn't know the serial number.

Welcome aboard jridder ! :welcome:

I can't remember exactly, but it sounds like this iMc may have come out after the retail 10.3.???

Would Apple still be hosting any Firmware Updates that old?

If I remember correctly the fruity iMac's came out before 10.3. I know I can install 10.2 on it without any issues.

I think the issue on this post is the same but it doesn't say where he got the serializer:

I sent an message to him and in the mean time I found BBS v1.1. I tried burning it to CD and the file names get messed up, although they look correct when I mount the image in High Sierra.

I just gave XPostFacto a try and no dice. It gets to the same spot as before and panics.

I may have a Panther disc in my storage room. Finding it, though, is the challenge. I kept retail boxes for everything from the public beta (just a folded piece of thick cardstock with the CD sleeved in) up through 10.5. I managed to lose my Jaguar disc during one of my many moves though, so that's why I say may.

Two other ways to get installs...

Editing the Bill of Laden... or Bill of something, I don't remember much about it.

Pacifist.
