Acquired a $500 Mac Pro a few weeks back (single CPU 3.2GHz quad-core Xeon, 16GB RAM), got a $40 discount from the seller since one of the RAM slots is DEAD. However, I plopped my HDs from my 2008 Mac Pro in it, and AMAZEBALLS – everything works just like the old machine… except that now I am running High Sierra in 4K video rather than El Capitan.

I was on the fence in regard to which graphics card to use, as I still rely on 10.7.5 for a lot of stuff. So, seeing how 4K video is so awesome I decided to just abandon 10.6.8 and go with the Radeon 7970 (found a Mac ROM online for a 7950 which works), rather that my original castrato plan of using a Radeon 580 (limited to El Capitan - up). I wish there was a stop-gap hack somewhere so I could at least put a Radeon R9 290x in this thing, but all in all this hardware upgrade (from 3,1 - 5,1) works great for me.

Unfortunately this means no more Unreal Tournament (unless it’s ported to Steam or if I decide to build another Bootcamp Windoze partition) but sometimes thing need to be put to rest; playing Quake 1 in 4K (Tenebrae) is pretty damn amazing though!

Eventually I’d love to get a dual CPU tray and put the coveted 3.46GHz Xeons into it, but will have to wait until my finances indicate it’s a go situation.

So it seems now as though I’ve got a 3,1 Mac Pro with dual 3.2GHz quad-core goodness with 16GB of RAM and a Mac-flashed Radeon 5870 for sale… any interested parties???

No boot screen unfortunately with the card as it’s not flashed with an actual Mac ROM. Not a show-stopper through. I am assuming this setup should get me through the next four to five years until Adobe and those other fookers decide to give me the hot unlubed shaft.
