I had heard some RX580s aren't supported and he's a real stickler for official Apple blessings so I gave him the technote on which cards are supported. Hell I saved him over $150 (Now that I think about it his was $170 to $180 on Amazon, so it could have been more than $150).

Aren't there 2 different "versions" of the RX580?

There's the 4GB and 8GB version. But the problem way back when was that some board IDs (from different manufacturers) weren't recognized as RX580 or at least wouldn't light up all the features that an "official" card would support. Sounds like they figured that part out.

Hey guys . . . um . . . has the Team been put on a "weight loss" program? I think I've moved up quite a bit, even though I haven't been able to get into my OSX partition to run dist.net until today . . . I thought I was in the mid-200s a few weeks back, now I'm in the mid-high 100's???

Have some of the other "back markers" been cleaned out to make it easier? Or, nope, same number, somehow I've kicked out enough stats to actually "earn" my team member in 171th place position??

Congrats on moving up again, 21876-1751=20125, which would've put you aqt 172nd place before today's submission. :)

@BD:

Thanks, it's all very humbling . . . to be part of this esteemed effort . . . I'd like to thank my wife of many years for her support while the machines have been crunching stats, while I stand next to it with a hand fan to keep it running cool and steady . . . as well as LADWP for offering me discounted electrical rates so that I could afford to crunch out these big numbers . . . . :coffee:

So, it seems like you are saying that the team hasn't been surgically altered by removing non-active members out of the way, but that the Towel Guy has slowly worked his way up the ladder to new dizzying heights all on his lonesome??? :emphatic-eek:

I was about to jump back in to crunching numbers, but I ran into some heat issues, so I am trying to learn as much as I can about that stuff first!

I see no trimming, but it would be possible for a no longer participating member to change teams & take their points away with them... but that seems unlikely. :)

Indeed it would. But keep in mind many of those long-idle members were doing CPU crunching on 601/603/604 CPUs, so their block counts, though small by today's standards, were very respectable for the time they were active. Today a single blast from a GPU can overwhelm their lifetime count. Technology marches on.

I remember setting up an entire lab of System 8.x / Mac OS 9 testing systems to crunch dnetc blocks during non-crunch periods. The end of game development is crunch time, you see...

AMD's next generation launched today, Radeon RX 5700, 5700XT, and RX5700XT Anniversary Edition. $349, $399, $449 I think. They'll be sold out in a day or two.

Vega 56 is still hovering at around $299. Hopefully once they start shipping Navi chips in quantity and non-reference designs come out the Vega will drop.

For me with a 480 the 580 or 590 really isn't much of a jump. The Vega represents a big enough jump, though I don't like spending much more than $200 which is why I play this waiting game on previous generation hardware. But even if it was $200 tomorrow I'd still have to say no, my poor car needs to be taken out back and shot.

Thanks MB for keeping a finger on the pulse of the market!

My recent jump in stats is due to a xfx rx 580. I traded with a coworker for a Dell XPS 8500 tower and I needed a video card and power supply to get the whole thing going. Part of the deal was a core i7 2600 salvaged from an old iMac. I got Mojave 10.14.5 going on it. I was inspired by Leo's screen grabs with his working 580s. The video card was literally plug and play easy!

Yeah the RX 580 is remarkably easy to come up, it did have a lot of fits and starts at first but it seems like Apple's iron fist has slipped loose just enough to allow a wider variety of cards to work.

Simply super stupid straightforward and not needing drivers! Don’t believe the marketing hype suggesting that only “certain” RX 580 cards are supported – I call bakka hanna shee on that!

I left my windows open a day too long, so I decided to crank some keys to heat the place up (building heat isn't turned on yet, eep).

Edit: I decided to get an RX590 too. It'll be here Sunday. I heard that RDR2 was announced and probably got a little too excited.

Ever have that gut sinking feeling upon opening a package only to realize it's the wrong thing? And then assume you were a dumbass and ordered the wrong thing?

Yeah, that basically happened, except I double checked and I ordered an RX590 but got an RX570. (sigh)

Amazon's been slapping the wrong labels on stuff with me lately. At work we ordered a batch of 16GB kits, they didn't include two. They sent a replacement next day, but it was DDR4 memory not DDR3 - it had an inventory sticker slapped on it for the DDR3 part. With this RX570 it's got an RX590 inventory sticker on a box that clearly says RX570 all over it. And I mean all over it. (sigh)

Oh well, maybe I'll get it by next weekend. Maybe they'll deliver it while I'm at work and it'll grow legs and wander off. :badteeth: So far I don't think anything like that's happened, the guy across the hall got some mail order bride and she orders TONS of stuff and I don't think any of their stuff has vanished. Frankly I was a little surprised that the Amazon driver took a few minutes to find my apartment building, I'd expect them to have this place well documented by now.

@MB:

Is that "eep" a message for me, or just an emotional "exclamation" due to lack of "residential heat"???? :upset:

It's just an expression of dismay. I probably should have written eek.

Replacement card showed up and it's actually a 590. And it came in a shipping box small enough that it should fit in the UPS dropoff outside work.

Not sure if I'll have the time to install on a weekday or not, I want to tear the system apart at the same time. Need to mount my SSD which requires removing the motherboard. Been putting it off for a couple months now.

That's my project for this weekend. Last weekend since the card got delayed I went ahead and setup a media server since Newegg (then Amazon) put 8TB WDs on sale for $140. Already had the PC built, just was waiting on disks. Grabbed a 128GB SSD plus the 8TB and Plex is rocking and rolling. Too bad Plex seems to completely ignore the GPU.

This week I had the thought that, since it's an AMD APU, maybe it could crunch RC5 keys. And it can. But it only around 550-600Mkeys/sec. Still, at least it has current driver support - all the other APUs I've worked with lately are stuck on an old driver with no hope of updating.

Now if only I could figure out how to turn off the blasted heatsink LED. It's a Wraith Max which has RGB LED support, but only when installed in a newer motherboard... on this old tank it's just red. Its a pretty shade of red, but the top of the case is clear and I'd rather have my bedroom dark vs. red. Apparently there's a plug I can yank out of the cooler but I couldn't find it last time I checked.

My ArtiClean just showed up at home. Hopefully it doesn't grow legs. Hopefully UPS left it at my door and not someone else's.

Just wondering, what is the big diff in prices about, & is an MSI Refurb a bad idea?

To be honest, since NewEgg got sold to that Chinese company I haven't bought anything from them. Or, well, I did for a little while, but their return system went straight down the crapper. Amazon regularly price matches them though, and their return system is damn near perfect. Hoverhound works pretty well to dig up comparable products while browsing NewEgg, though sometimes it barfs.

Ended up not taking the HSF off because I couldn't find the damn long-handle bendy allen wrench it came with. I actually have a couple of them, one will turn up eventually. Still got the motherboard out so I could swap SSDs around along with cleaning the hell out of the rest of the case. The RX590 is a lot shorter and a lot fatter than the RX480. Looks like it wiped out my "overclock" settings when switching cards... my overclock consists of running the fans @ 100%. I benched the card at 5.7Bkeys/sec. Only problem is the power switch didn't survive, managed to disconnect one of the leads. Good thing this case has a reset switch, it's my power switch until I solder the leads back on.

Sometimes refurbs are great, other times they're kind of dicey. Best to buy from someone with a good return policy in case you figure out something's wrong with it on day 31. NewEgg charges restocking fees for everything now.
