Hi all,

I just upgrade a Mac Pro 2012 3.33 24G RAM SM 951 PCI-E boot drive from OS 10.9.5 to 10.12.6. I am getting errors that the applications are using all of the RAM and the applications are "paused" for some reason.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you from a rusty old Mac guy.

Hey Rusty! ;)

What happens if you Safe Boot holding Shift key at boot up?

Does Console report nothing useful?

I wonder if Spotlight is stealing the show. You could exclude the HD from Spotlight and see what effect that has.

Hey BD,

I will give it a try. This is an upgrade of an upgraded upgrade so I think that I should have done a clean install.

Best,
R

The memory used does not grow in safe boot. The machine does not seem to like the safe boot as I get video artifacts. Time for a clean install ?

Results would indict some incompatible 3rd party? Extension running, Console in regular boot may shoe repeating errors.

EtreCheck is a simple little app to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac.

Of course an erase & fresh Install would likely fix it... until you imported something you needed from other install or backup.

Any chance you've manually disabled the dynamic pager?

If all else fails, there is always the reinstall option. Who knows, might do the trick.

Yes. If you've disabled swapping...odd things may eventually happen. If you have, then try re-enabling it and see if it helps. It should be a very simple thing to test:
sudo launchctl list | grep dynamic

Disabling the pager even with 32 GB RAM will cause the OS to do things it shouldn't do. The VM compressor especially is integrated tightly into memory management. If you have that disabled, you can guarantee the OS isn't going to run correctly. It didn't have that problem prior to 10.10, but now it does. Disabling swap isn't death to the OS, but if you shut down the VM compressor, even for a moment, all bets are off as the OS will throw its hands up and balk left and right, assuming it doesn't outright kernel panic on you.

I will just about guarantee it's a process associated with Apple Mail, it stuck out like a sore thumb in Activity Monitor for me.

Kill the process and reboot, it never happened again for me after that.
