Since I can’t go beyond iOS12 on my iPhone 6s (BDA's wise advice) it seems smart to get access to the user guide.
I have a link to the guide for 11: https://help.apple.com/iphone/11/ (and a similar one for 10).

I can’t find one for 12.
Can anyone find an iOS 12 guide for the phone like the one I’ve linked for 11 above?

I did find this:
https://books.apple.com/us/book/iphone-user-guide-for-ios-12-1/id1420662672

It appears to be something I have to purchase for $12.99 (see review 1 * from Neuxstone ) though I don’t see this mentioned anywhere on the listing.

I’ve never purchased an iBook though I’ve downloaded some for free.

If I download the guide onto my iMac, can I also download it to the iPhone or will I have to purchase it again? I see no instructions about purchasing but when I downloaded the sample it shows BUY in the upper left corner.

I have an ancient $50 credit in the iTunes store (? Is that what it’s called?) and I think I can use that credit in the Apple Store, but I don’t know if that is true nor how to do it.

So it may be that purchase is my only option - I just don’t know how to avoid purchasing it twice for the 2 devices.

Thanks for any help and advice anyone may have!

Thank you BDA,

Tom's Guide looks good.

I can't find a working link to a manual in your second link - perhaps I'm missing something.

If Tom's stays up I probably can make a bookmark to that on the phone and don't have to download (and buy?) the iBook version from Apple.

Not to worry. You have convinced me that 12 is where I am staying.
I'm still on El Cap - don't seem to have the time or wherewithal to do the updates.
Hoping that when I finally do go to High Sierra everything that syncs and works now will still - Image Capture and iMessage are the big ones for me to be able to access from iMac and use with phone and I do do backups with iTunes as well. (I think that is no longer possible at some point in the updating world that I haven't ventured into or am I misremembering?)

Look what I found by further poking - free online it seems - but not for off line reading (neither are the other links I have for 11 or 10)

This was buried and I don't know how I found it (I can't retrace my steps) - it doesn't come up for me in Google by simply searching for User Guide for iOS 12
https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/download-or-bookmark-the-user-guide-iph3bf43c08/12.0/ios/12.0

If you hit table of contents and then click on any of the options you can read the guide. That is until Apple decides to take this off line.

I looked at getting books from the Apple store and it certainly implies that GET button means the item is free - "Tap Buy to purchase a title, or tap Get to download a free title." https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/find-and-buy-books-iphab21972d/12.0/ios/12.0 but the reviews seem to say otherwise. I don't know if it's worth a gamble to hit GET and see what happens, but I suspect my $50 iTunes gift card will be charged (gee, I don't trust Apple, do I?)

Beats me - what would make your computer think you are in France?
Until I clicked the links you gave, I got it in English.

Sometimes after I check a lot of Japanese sites, I'm given everything in Japanese until I figure out how to convince Google that Vermont is not in Japan.

BTW - do you think it's worth it? - or stoppable? - to click GET and see if it charges me?
Or contact support and ask them if it will (why do I think I could get help from apple support???)

The link you provide says:

Tap Buy to purchase a title, or tap Get to download a free title

I haven't tried with this one but I suspect Apple manuals are free.

Hi Limnos,

Yes, I know it says that, but as I said above...

several of the reviews seem to say (no they DO say) that they were charged - one says 19.99 and one said less, I recall 12.99.

That's why I wondered - if GET really means Gotcha!

It is free. I just downloaded the 12.3 version (I see no 12.4 version) on my iOS9 iPhone. I have no payment form associated with my Apple account, nor any credit.

Thanks for the information and for taking the leap of faith.

I will download it to my iPhone 6s and hopefully to my iMac as well.

No real leap of faith. Apple has no way of charging me since I have no account balance nor a payment method entered in their system. I figured if they were going to charge me they would insist I enter a method before they let me download it.
