Weblock ad blocker causing iCloud issues?

So both my iOS devices (iPhone and iPad) hung up after updating to 10.3 at the same place- where you enter your iCloud info or skip that step. Either way, they hung.

Apple helped me restore my devices to blank slates, a mixed blessing in that I did lose some prefs in some apps but no real data loss. I had to reload all the apps back onto the devices, which I chalked up to a spring cleaning. That and remembering all kinds of in app passwords and settings was fun.

Last night I opened Safari and there were ads all over again. Oops, forgot to run weblock.app and get the proxy to paste into the wifi setting for my router. I did that and all was well, most ads were gone.

This morning I was pulling espresso shots to test roasts from last week and putting the data into a Numbers.app spreadsheet. Instead of updating it just sat there and spun the wheel of 'thinking' it has. All my iCloud docs spun if I tried to open anything that wasn't already on the iPad.

Arg. And weird. In the Settings.app I opened the iCloud settings and same thing, spinning. The spinning stopped after a while saying the info on my family and storage weren't available at the time.

Maybe iCloud was down/having issues? So I loaded up the settings on my phone and iMac and everything worked as expected. So did opening / closing docs.

Somewhere in there I thought to myself 'what's different on the iPad' and remembered the weblock.app (which auto correct wants to be wedlock.. hmmm.).

Sure enough, I turned off the proxy server and BAM! Everything works as it should. Turn the proxy on and un-bam, everything sucks again.

I'm pretty sure it's an unintentional result of weblock doing it's job so I wrote them and explained what happened.

Does all this make sense? If it does - I'm pretty proud of myself for figuring it out. I left a voicemail for the Apple guy with this info.

Someone here who understand networking better than I do can probably answer this one pretty quickly.

Thanks ahead of time!

Sounds like you did a great job of figuring it out. :)

Maybe. I did speak to my Apple tech about this today. He seemed to buy this theory. He's a step or two up from the entry level person you get when one calls in with an issue.

I guess what I'm hoping to hear is - yes, that is entirely possible given how the ad blockers work on iOS. If the developer writes me back with this answer I'll be satisfied I wasn't just lucky somehow.

Well, since weblock is implemented as a proxy server it would be capable of blocking any traffic that passes through it.

Why would they do it? That's a question for weblock to be honest. I imagine it would be unintentional.

If you're capable of modifying the weblock filters it's possible you inadvertently added a filter that blocks iCloud traffic.

MB- I'm wondering if Apple is using some different IP addresses now? Some move that takes place after the upgrade? Up until the upgrade weblock worked really well. It made browsing tolerable on my iPad! I wish it worked where we need it most- when using LTE. Sometimes I wonder how much data is actually the page I wanted vs ads.

Here's the reply I received from the developer this morning. I believe they are in Poland. I believe my guess was correct judging by their response:

we are hard at work to investigate and fix issues with iCloud and other Apple services while Weblock is enabled. We'll introduce a "allow apple" rule at the end of Filters section once we test it thoroughly.

Kind regards,
Kamil Palczewski

I'll certainly disable this, and 'find my iPad' AND make a back-up locally with a password before doing any more updates like this.

Apple Dictionary...

Update: Less is more.

Upgrade: Way less is way more.

No kidding.

I back up so much now I hear 'beep beep beep' in my sleep now.

Generally I wait a bit to see if there are any bricks made with updates. This time I didn't see much in people having issues updating so I thought it was safe. Turns out the gun was loaded and each foot has a hole in it now. Go figure.

This is also why I fall on the upgrade sword first before updating my GF's stuff. She is grateful.
