Got an alert text on my flip phone, it starts...

//sys:10y... lots of gibberish

How do IO tell if it infected me? I haven't "read" it yet, whatever that does for me.

It is a fair presumption if you don't know who it is from. Treat it with the same scepticism of an unsolicited email.

You are right to not click on the link. I think you have an Android don't you, well all you need to do is delete the message by touching on the message for a second or two, where up the top will show 1 selected and a trash can; tap the trash can to open it and choose delete message.

The first thing we did on my wife's Android was to put malwarebytes on it. Just $12/year. And be sure to give it "device admin" privileges.

Thanks to both, I don't think this flip phone can download or even run any Apps/

I deleted it.

Was pretty sure you didn't have a smartphone, suggestion was just in case. Not sure if a dumb phone can be infected by malware. I think my wife's dumb phone used to get junk like that, especially robo calls that couldn't be blocked, but don't think malware was a threat--at least, never thought about it.

Some discussion about this here

If you can, delete the text without opening the link. A lot of texts are designed to trigger when you either read the text or click a link in the text. However for the former variety they target specific phones & OS versions, so if you get a text targeting iOS 7 and you're on a flip phone, well, it won't do anything.

Obviously if the text contains a link and you click the link then all bets are off, it will probably try to take you to a server where they can just sit there trying vulnerability after vulnerability until they find one that works. Used to be it would load page A which would try an exploit and if the exploit didn't work it would forward you to page B and so on and on in lightning fast progression but that tended to tie up your system to the point that it wouldn't be able to do, well, anything, so people tended to react rather quickly.
