I just thought I'd throw this out there, since some people across the Internet are unduly concerned about it.
If you see authentication attempts through SSH on your Mac that indicate an error from some IP address via some other IP address, the "via" part is just telling you which interface the connection attempt came in on, which is useful if you have multiple simultaneous active interfaces. For example:
sshd: error: PAM: authentication error for root from 22.214.171.124 via 192.168.2.100
In this case 192.168.2.100 is an IP address of your own computer, and 126.96.36.199 is a Chinese SSH bot. Don't let the "via" part scare you.
