AT&T “broad” band here:

Image

Earlier this morning I was downloading at around 130KB/sec max. It took about three minutes for Apple’s Mail.app to fetch new mail messages (there were fewer than 20). This evening, upon attempting to watch Youtube videos from 19Bozzy92, I had to give up, as it would play for 2 seconds, pause, play for 2 seconds, pause, etc… and this was on 720p settings.

Last time I checked, the year was 2017. I thought we were supposed to have kickass high-speed broadband here in Silicon Valley, California. I live three miles from downtown San Jose (home to Cisco Systems, Adobe Systems, etc. etc.), and back in 2004 I was imagining how fast internet speeds would someday be; we aren’t there yet. WTF dude?

Post your speeds/locations if you don’t mind.

T-Mobile 4G from Seattle, but I think T-Mobile switches to secret normally unavailable speed mode whenever you do a speed test....

You're getting about the same up as I get on cable.

The only thing I dislike about my provider is that their up speeds are half what they should be.

If I don't keep on top of QoS it gets ugly. But I do have over a half dozen devices attached and fighting for a piece of that upstream.

My cable connected test showed (below), though it can peak at 3.8 MB/s sometimes. Quite modest by U.S standards. Motorcycle racing resumes this month and I'm a big fan of getting a copy of the proceedings.

Oh, I thought you didn't like my use of TinyPic link to my inline image, preferrring instead Xymer's attachment upload facility, which in truth didn't realize it could do that. So much easier than using a third party. Sorry to confuse you.

I'm on Comcast and manage 19 Mb/s down and 3.5 Mb/s up for only $100/month without television or phone service  .

I was going to drop down to the standard tier of internet service, which was 20-something down and 1.5 or 1Mb up buuuuuuut when I called to make that change they gave me a deal where where I'd pay the same rate for my current service for a year.

What happened during that year? Merger. Now the new merged company's standard tier of service is what I have. The cheaper tier was eliminated. :?

And of course because it's cable their competitors won't compete with them. Well, one does - and oh my god do they absolutely HATE that company - but they haven't rolled out service this far. If I moved a mile to the east I could get them. But I hate moving even more than I hate overpaying for internet service.

Was getting 50/50 (effectively ~60/60), but out of the goodness of their hearts Verizon (Fios) just gave me a free upgrade to 75/75. I appear to be getting even more. Paying $72 for unlimited phone + Internet. Hope not, but I'm wondering if this "gift" isn't getting me ready for a price hike in the not too distant future. Around here, they are competing with TimeWarner cable, now "Spectrum"--endlessly barraged with junk mail from them--so maybe that will keep VZ in line. (Had to temporarily reinstall Flash to use any of the OOKLA based speedtests. None of the HTML5 ones reflect what (I think) I'm really getting. DSLReports servers are too far away.) Before Fios I was using VZ copper DSL, was happy if I could consistently get 1Mbps. Often got half of that with numerous interruptions of service.

Don't really need all this speed, except maybe when downloading a huge Apple update.

200/20 Cable ISP in Abilene Texas. This is the middle of nowhere. It works pretty well. They do not have any competition here and offer up to 1 Gb per second Docsis 3. I wish there was fiber.

For some reason it won't grade my speed. I blame Puma 6. :(

And I'm gonna lose half of that upload sweetness when I switch to the SB8200 that's on the way since I'm getting those awesome upload speeds due to the engineering test firmware for Puma 6 beta testers.

So. Any idea how I’m living the heart of “Sillycorn Valley” and getting such shitty bandwidth? Am I using the wrong brand of deodorant or what? This is fuckin frustrating, as I am paying $64.40 per month. Some times it works just fine, but over the past few weeks it’s been marginal pretty much any time of day/night. Ought I call these fuckers up and cancel my service so as to threaten them with losing an otherwise loyal customer?

Meanwhile, Sunday afternoon, and my maximum download speed is around 238KB/second. I think it’s time to tell AT&T to go screw themselves, and that they have lost a customer. Jerkasses!!! :nothappy:

Seriously, what the hell is this crap?

Leo, your ping is especially high. Have you tried power cycling your DSL modem? And if you're stuck with a 2Wire modem, ugh....

Seriously, if you can get Comcast in your area just go with that. For roughly the same price you'd get ~75/5 service. For $89.95 (assuming you own your own modem), you can get Blast Pro! which is 200/10 (which overprovisions to 240/12).

What do you mean by data usage?
Usage includes all the data you receive (download) or send (upload). If you access the Internet through your home Wi-Fi network using any device (including smartphones), that will be included in your data usage.

This includes software update requests, email notifications, and resend requests. Individual usage results may vary based on the applications you use and the content you access. For example, if your emails have large attachments, the usage for that application may exceed what we have estimated in the data calculator. See the online Data Calculator and instructional videos for further information.

For DSL, in some cases, AT&T is unable to measure your data usage due to system limitations. In that case, you will be unable to determine your usage using the data tracker, and AT&T will not charge you for usage over your data allowance.
Learn how to check your Internet data usage.
Learn how to estimate your future data usage with the Internet Data Calculator.
Increased data allowances for select Internet customers
Why does AT&T have a data usage allowance for wireline Internet customers?
This program is designed to help keep Internet service affordable for our broad base of customers given the rapidly increasing volume of data-rich Internet traffic.

What are the new data allowances?
AT&T increased Internet Data allowances on August 21, 2016. The Internet allowances include the following:
150 Gigabytes (GB) per month for customers on our DSL network.
1 Terabyte (TB) per month for speeds up to and including 768 Kilobits per second (Kbps) through 300 Megabits per second (Mbps).
Unlimited home Internet data for the Internet 1000 speed tier.

Leo you may want to check out http://www.dslextreme.com/ . They resale others services. You should be able to get the same service through them (using AT&T lines) for cheaper. They also do not have the 150gig limit per month like the normal AT&T dsl planes. Good luck!

Given his speeds I doubt 150GB/month is a problem.

I get reasonable speeds at work: 843 Mb/s down and 655 Mb/s up. Ping time to the test server is 10ms.

HUH???? WTF?!?!?!

Image

Suddenly this afternoon it’s like I have balls again, and there is this strange magical tingling sensation as if the internet is nice again.

I wonder what the deal is? Perhaps someone from AT&T read this thread and decided to “un-throttle” my service for fear of my leaving them for Comcast? :|

Whatevers. I’ll keep on believing whatever is going on, and if it reverts back again, then it’s clearly manipulation.

Thinking of constructing a Faraday-esque tinfoil hat. :p_dog:
