Here's something I've struggled with for a while as a serial Powermac/Mac Pro user, webcams and Facetime. Up until probably a year ago I ran ye olde firewire iSight which in it's favour 'just worked' but was very long in the tooth. 480p IIRC and not the greatest focussing and light performance. It did the job, but when I picked up a Macbook Pro I realised just how poor it was in comparison to that.

So I initially picked up a Logitech 1080p webcam that though not made for mac, reports said it worked. It did, sort of... The picture was full 1080p and looked really rather stunning in Quicktime. However in Facetime it only worked at 720p and the sound always echoed so bad it was unusable. I sent that back and picked up an old Tandberg HD (720p) camera for buttons. It reminds me a lot of an updated iSight and indeed, just works... As long as the room is well lit. If it's not the picture becomes super grainy and gets really noticable lag.

Now in the meantime I've picked up a proper mic that runs through my soundcard and works beautifully (Audient ID-4 and a Marantz MPM-1000). So I'm now just trying to find a camera that works well with Facetime. I've no requirement for it to do sound. Any experience/suggestions?

My experience with cameras and Facetime is limited to placing tape over built-in cameras.

Sorry Juansolo:
If I use facetime, I just borrow Wifey's iPhone and stick my Maine Coon Cat in front of it while
talking. He copies my mouth movements.

For Microphone on Mac pro I like the old dragon speech head set.

You might check out OWC for a good camera:
