I’m cloning High Sierra from an ext drive back to an internal SSD using Carbon Copy Cloner. The internal SSD currently is APFS and the external is HFS+. I presume I will be able to select which format to use on the internal SSD. The question is should I leave it APFS or, as I am downgrading the OS to High Sierra (I have another post about this), should I reformat to HFS+?

High Sierra runs just fine on an HFS+ SSD & I prefer HFS+ for it's repairability & readability for OSes less than 10.13, but can't be sure 10.13.6 doesn't auto change it, I never did the Firmware update on my cMP...

From my experience, High Sierra will not force APFS on an internal drive
created from a backup restored to an HFS drive. You must of course
format internal drive HFS first before restoring HS to it.

If HS is installed (using a macos installer) to a external drive, it will
install HFS by default.

Only Mojave will force use of APFS during install from an initial MacOS
installer (on internal or external media), but even Mojave won't auto
change format of an HFS drive restored from a Backup. However
Mojave will refuse OS updates if it is installed on an HFS drive.
HS will accept OS updates if installed on HFS.

Thanks kjk555, that was what I was remembering but I don't trust my memory all that much any more. :)

Thank you BDA and kjk555 for the useful info. I think on this slower mac mini I'm going to stick with HFS+. I never really noticed many issues using it over the past 20 or so years.
