As I often do, I just used the Finder to create a zip file; this time containing four audio files. But, when the process begins, the window status bar tells me "Compressing six items." After it finished, I opened the archive, and there were only my four audio files in it. Why does it say six when there are only four?

What OS version?

Doesn't happen here at all.

Could there be 2 invisible files in the list?

It's .DS_Store is probably one of the items and if anything was in a folder there would be a second .DS_Store inside it. Otherwise it'll stick resource forks/metadata into a second invisible file for each file that has them.

You can see them on a FAT32 volume if you look at it in Terminal (ls -al) or have Finder set to show hidden items (er, I think) - the files will start with ._ and contains the name of the item in that directory. Oh, they also write them to SMB shares.

There's also extra information inside .zips created by OS X, there's something like a MACOSX folder and other gobbledigook that it just throws in there, probably to tell OS X's decompressor app that it created the zip, so treat it as Mac data and combine those disparate forks back into a single file. I only ever see them on Windows, seems like all the Mac Zip utilities hide it from you.
