Is it necessarily a "crash" if an application quits on its own? I'm assuming a crash would generate an alert to that effect, asking whether I want to report it.

Water Break, an app I use to remind me to drink water on a schedule (a long story), launches on login and requires no interaction from me after I create the schedule. If I want to quit it, I have to click its menu bar icon and then click another button to get the menu that contains the Quit button. So it's not that I might be quitting this app accidentally without realizing it.

It's not a huge deal, of course. Just makes me curious. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

There are no logs in ~/Library/Logs (or even /Library/Logs) that relate to the app. Where else should I look?

Have you just searched the system.log?

I hadn't until you just suggested it. But, as I discovered, the system log apparently shows only the current day. This happened yesterday. So, if you feel this is where it would show up, I'll check there next time it happens.

Thanks!

If this happens frequently enough that it's relatively repeatable (to the extent random is repeatable), leave the Console app open so it can sample and check back later. If it's quit itself again, search for the login item's name in the console app (make sure you don't close it first! Modern Console must be open to continously sample unlike the old setup that kept everything in logs no matter what).

BD, found nothing under /var/Logs that seemed relevant to the app.

But, as for Console, are you saying, ST, that unless I leave it open, it won't log this app quitting? Or does leaving Console open just make it easier to find the entry faster?

Console only logs events that occur when its open now.

No I don't understand why Apple did this either. Probably someone wanted to rewrite Console but didn't get authorization for enough money to do it right, so they put together this half-assed implementation.
