I noticed my version 3-something of The Unarchiver was having problems with some archive formats. Went to check if a newer Unarchiver was available. Sure, version 4 is out, but it is now brought to you by the distributors (MacPaw) of such "quality" software as CleanMyMac. Like a lot of software these days it tries to call home when you run it.

I did a similar post on ASC. General response was MacPaw does sell stuff that people can do stupid things with but that's the way things are and if people want to buy it then it's hard to blame somebody from selling it. MP's a step above slimeware such as MacKeeper. The site to which the new Unarchiver is trying to connect is also used by reputable vendors trying to compete with Internet behemoths with the result that it's attract varying qualities of software.

The "answer" seems to be to use Keka which can probably decode most things you need. The Unarchiver has a big list of what it can do but frankly most of them I am unlikely to encounter. I'll leave my old Unarchiver on my computer and add Keka for when I encounter something with a newer encode version the Unarchiver can't handle.

Looks like you've been using Keka longer than me!

Not everybody loves MacPaw...

Appears BBB has gad some success with them...

Many of the recent spam attacks here came from the same place...

Version 4.0.0

What a glorious day! We know you've been waiting for this update to happen for so long. And in turn we wanted to bring you something worthy. So, fasten your seat belts, here we go.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-una ... 4353?mt=12

Package contents -> Resources includes some nice little MacPaw presents. Thank you, but no thanks, will fasten my seat belt and trash your glorious day update. Will keep using Keka or old version Unarchiver 2.3 (Btw, said it was "damaged," wouldn't allow me to install the app minus the garbage.)

I must have used Keka in the context of that discussion but I haven't used it in several years. I seem to recall the earlier version was maybe starting when I didn't want it to start and it might have been early design flaws. Anyway, for the past 3 years or so I've been using the Unarchiver 3 until I discovered it was having problems with some recent files and I needed something up to date. I checked for Unarchiver updates and found version 4 which led to this thread...

I think Unarchiver is part of a bundle if you get it from the Mac App Store but you can download it as a solo package from unarchiver.com [Edit: see later correction] (which mentions MacPaw ownership).

Those .tiff in screenshot above are from the standalone download, not the app store. Just images, but must I think be related to some kind of promotion from within the application. At the app store, one reviewer complained about finding Setapp, whatever that is, uninvited in the menubar.

Anyway, hardly need anything to do extraction, so no need for this thing, even if it doesn't install anything bundled in the non-app store version.

BD, where did that offer to buy the domain name come from?
