From the cruising around I've done, I THINK there have been 2 firmware updates for cMP 5,1 machines. One to allow HS and one for Mohave. Got a nVidia card that suits me just fine so Mohave is out. HS supposedly does have some fixes for issues with Metal in Sierra. As I play a MMORPG that uses Metal, it might be an idea to go for HS... for some reason, needing to do a firmware update somehow makes me nervous.Anyone know of any serious failures doing that particular update (i.e. bricking the machine)?

Am I correct in thinking these firmware updates are actually built into the OS Installer?

The HS installer I have says 13.06.2, 09/18, is this the latest one?

The HS Installer did contain a 5,1 specific Firmware update I thought... but unable to find it in the Installer today!?

Ah, here it is...
Firmware:
EfiUpdaterApp2.efi
MP51_0089_00B_LOCKED.fd
MP51.crc32

Come to think of it, yes, sometime in the past Apple started including Firmware Updates in Installers, even Security Updates.

I've seen a few bricked MP 5,1s from the Update, but not near as many as on MBPs, MBs, & iMacs, bricked may not be the right word as some at least were able to Restore a previous OS.

This is the one I have, which by date would not include Apple's replacement for the original borked 2019-002 Security update...

Ha, didn't get hit by that Sec. update, remember, 980? Gotta wait for nVidia to update the web driver before I can apply the security update! I DID pay a bunch for the flashed 980, but I do get a very decent image without the nVidia driver!

Apple does it again with Security Updates...

I see it's been replaced by 2019-004 already! :)

I didn't do 2019-003 & it is no longer available in SWUPD.

Searched all over, but not seeing -004 anywhere either for Sierra or HSierra. Nothing in my HSierra App Store > Updates. Even after reload page, still showing "no updates." Would assume if there's one for Sierra, there would also be one for HSierra. Where are you seeing this?

I wonder if it doesn't show if you did -003???

Oh, I see it's a Public Betas, not signed up for any & wasn't the 2019-003 made available 3 days ago or so

just googled "macos security update public beta 2010-004 10.13.6" nothing came up. Weird, never came across anything "sec upd public beta." What is that, and why would it show up for you???? Could it mean a final release -004 is somewhere in the pipeline?

Oh and just found this. Looks like you must be enrolled. But strange that it's not giving you the option to install the -003 release.

It is strange, not signed up, but maybe it's as messed up as ASC is.

Hmmm, also on further checking it says I did install 2019-003, but I was very careful not to since several people had severe problems with it.

On the day 004 showed up AppStore Window open showing the 2019-003 available for install, later refreshed that window & 003 was gone & 004 Beta was available... don't Security Updates always need a Restart?

Only thing I can think is they dug up some past Beta involvement AND 004 is a replacement for 003 !???

Twilight zone. What are you seeing in system profiler/information for Installations? That should tell you what's really going on.

You can always install the standalone https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2004?locale=en_US

In fact, might not be a bad idea to apply it anyway, even if installations is showing installed.

I haven't seen any issues at all with the HSierra -003, either on the Mac (installed from swupd) or the Mini (from the standalone.) Of course, had a fresh clone ready, just in case.

Just open it up, Installations is listed under Software. Everything there is in alphabetical order.

Thanks a bunch, poor vision & never noticed that.

Now it gets even stranger, it's listed... TWICE, & as Public Beta!, & a month ago !?

Security Update Public Beta 2019-003:

Version: 10.13.6
Source: Apple
Install Date: 04/21/19, Apr 21 05:39 AM

Security Update Public Beta 2019-003:

Version: 10.13.6
Source: Apple
Install Date: 04/21/19, Apr 21 05:57 AM

And Apple's link says it was released on 13 May 2019, 3 weeks after I supposedly installed it! ?

Well, since it appears you've only installed the -003 beta so far, probably a good idea to install the real thing now, from the standalone. Also seems like it not be a bad idea to disenroll from that beta program, since it seems to really be screwing with you.

I believe if you enrolled your apple id & base OS in the Sierra or High Sierra public beta that you'll be presented beta patches from now until the end of time. Or at least I haven't figured out how to unenroll myself from the beta program (since I didn't sign up for a Mojave beta I just see normal public updates there).

I wonder if -004 is going to be released on Apple's usual fixed-release schedule (every 2 months) or if they'll skip the next scheduled release since they pushed -003 out "early."

Huh. You might just be part of the developer program then and get them by default. I signed up for a free dev account ages ago and really haven't done much with it besides the occasional public beta and reading developer-targeted documentation on something or other that's not working. Its possible for developer accounts to just "be" a member of the operating system prerelease program and not have to individually sign up for them. Normally that's a function of the paid ADC accounts but Apple could have made an exception.

Whew, took W's advice to install the real 2019-003 Sec Upd for 10.13.6,2011 iMac, what a pain!

1.88 GB download, restart... black screen, Apple icon, progress bar... 5 times!

5th time comes up with bigger Apple & fatter progress bar, aha methinks... something different.

Nope 6th time small Apple icon & progress bar, progresses 1/4", black screen, Apple icon, progress bar moves 1/8th inch, through the black screen a couple of more times, progress bar moves about 3/16th " And text below says 45 minutes remaining!

What the heck could be going on, I'm booting from & installing to a FW/800 drive, but they aint that slow, & it has 50%, over 300 GB Free Space!

5 minutes later it says 44 minutes remaining, 15 minutes later it says 41 minutes remaining, I watch it 15 more minutes & it says 40 minutes remaining!

I decide I need a Nap & something to eat... come back an hour later... black screen, doesn't seem to want to wake up... oh external drives flashing lights, screen lights up finally!

WTF,,, Mac OS can't be installed on this Mac Target Disk too small, with a picture of a dry looking mountain in a circle above that... no idea what OS it was truying to install or why.

Power down, power up, progress bar slowly moves half way across the screen...

Black screen, progress bar moves about 3/16th " And text below says 45 minutes remaining!

Power down restart with alt key to boot from internal drive, run Disk First Aid on the volume that I was trying to install to, no problem, reset Startup disk & back to where it was... I tell myself let me try this one more time, Restated...

Wallah, that was easy! :upset: :bonk: :whip:

Installations said 2019-003 was installed, opened App Store... ACKKKK, downloading 2019-003 again & App Store froze, couldn't force quit for 5 minutes, finally it quit, open AppStore again, not trying to DL 003 now but 004 Beta available again.

It certainly feels to me like Apple's been making certain assumptions for firmware updates that only work off the internal drive for a while now.

Ah, maybe that's it. Internal had 249 GB free & a nice 10.12.6 Install on it.

Wow TM says 137.34 GB backup needed after the 2019-003 Install.

Scarier yet, this was pic above "couldn't install MacOS on this drive"... Mojave on a Mac that can't run Mojave!

That's the first thing that came to mind when you described the graphic.

Strange things are afoot in the apple factory.
