I've just got a piece of software called Debut, version 4.12 for macosx (version 10.13.6 on the machine). This records screen video including streaming video. I find that the only sound it can record (as far as I can see) is from the microphone. So the sound track accompanying a video is picked up by the microphone via the iMac's loudspeakers - a bit primitive, I think. As a result, yesterday I successfully recorded a piece with the soundtrack enhanced by the sounds of my spoon clinking on a bowl as I had my breakfast.

I enquired on the support forum. The only reply so far claims that "Mac computers will not allow you to capture the internal sound of your Mac.". Yet on my older iMac, with OS 10.6.8, I can choose either 'Built-in microphone' or 'Built-in Input'. I have used a piece of mildly decent software called CD Spin Doctor for years very easily, avoiding the microphone as necessary.

Is it really the case that "Mac computers will not allow you to capture the internal sound of your Mac." ?. If so, it seems to be a feature that's been removed from macosx.

You can't boot from an older OS to test?

If you're going for a streaming app, you could try one of the ones listed here:

https://filmora.wondershare.com/live-st ... r-mac.html

OBS is very popular among gaming streamers, but it has a steep learning curve when setting it up.

I've previously Jack router to define inter-application audio routes for recording without plugging a patch cable between my audio out port and my audio in port. It doesn't always work well, but it has worked some of the time when there appeared to be no other viable alternatives.

Whatever happened to Audio Hijack Pro? As far as I can remember, it allowed you to be able to route/combine/adjust ANY audio path(s) into another. I tried it once and then got busy doing other things so never fully got to use it to it’s intended potential.

Debut only works with Yosemite and up. My other older iMac has Snowie as OS. Thanks for the suggestion anyway, BD. :)

They look a bit 'advanced' for me, but thanks ST.

I went with Loopback, recommended by someone on the Debut forums. Embarassingly pricey but it works like a dream with virtually no learning curve. I'll have to do a lot of washing up to cover the cost ;)

Thanks for all the replies, folks.

Nice! Glad to hear a positive report back on your success! Sometimes the “ass saver essential” software out there requires some big money, but once again saves your bacon when you need it.
