While connecting my two speakers to a wireless remote AC power switch, I must've stupidly momentarily hit the rocker switch on the power strip that my Mac mini and external drives are plugged into. So, two questions about Disk Utility (on OS 10.12.6):

1) After a loss of power, will Disk Utility run in the background during startup to fix any issues, and

2) Are there any known issues with using Disk Utility on a Time Machine disk?

Many thanks!

As part of mounting the disk it will determine if the disk was dismounted cleanly last time and if not replay the log of recent changes to try and get the disk into a usable state so it can mount it onto the desktop. This doesn't mean the disk doesn't have corruption, it has to hit a certain level of severity to mount it with the dreaded "disk has serious errors back up your data now" error, and past that point it won't mount at all. It can have some corruption and still mount, same as has been the case for years (decades?) now.

I don't particularly like the new Disk Utility but I don't know of any unique problems repairing disks in it, beyond figuring out where Apple decided to arbitrarily move things like repair disk into.

Thanks, MB.
