I just spent an hour on the phone and opened a case
file with Apple Support on this issue. I'll follow up on
it. Whether anything good happens, remains to be seen.

I have literally never heard of Apple providing useful information or offering a non-perfunctory response to a bug report.

You are probably right Anon.

If I were to tinker to try to bug fix, I would start with the GroupByKind.plist in the
Finder app's Resources directory.

I would add the 2 String values lines:

com.apple.service-file
SERVICE

----------

Hmmm, there's 2 of those files, which one or both?

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/FinderKit.framework/Versions/A/Resources/GroupByKind.plist

/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/GroupByKind.plist

BD:

Looks like those two files mirror one another.

Edit Both? - Probably.

Either way SIP will have to be disabled first.

Somebody probably screwed up compiling the private frameworks.

Backups are mandatory and on standby when you tinker of course.

I drudged the internet for a cure, but couldn't find anything remotely useful

Thanks, I thought they weren't equal here, but they are.

Changed those 2 files on my recent clone, omnly required unlocking to insert & Save...

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<array>
<string>com.apple.service-file</string>
<string>SERVICE</string>
<string>com.adobe.pdf</string>
<string>PDF</string>
<string>com.apple.application-bundle</string>
<string>APPLICATIONS</string>
<string>com.apple.application-file</string>
<string>APPLICATIONS</string>

Booted from Clone, no change...
VirusBarrier X5 Service.service.app

While booted from the clone, changed the previous boot drives files to...

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<array>
<string>com.apple.service-bundle</string>
<string>SERVICE</string>
<string>com.adobe.pdf</string>
<string>PDF</string>

No change, finder still adds .app

Should've done this before, but GroupByKind.plist on 10.12.6 is identicle to the original on 10.13.6

Nice try though! :)
