Can't seem to find an answer, only others asking why it/they, supposedly looks like a single Mono port in Sound Prefs & Midi Setup!???

https://support.apple.com/kb/SP776?locale=en_US

Is it or they Stereo?

Is there a way to reset the audio configuration to factory defaults (e.g. using a shell script or changing some config-file?

I don't think Apple has supported stereo mics without a USB adapter for at least for the past few years. Maybe when they had a dedicated mic jack, but the combined mic/headphone jack has been mono to my knowledge.

It looks like you can use both headphones & mic at the same time if you use an adapter cable:
https://apple.stackexchange.com/questio ... hone-input

If you look at the posted pinout for the 4-conductor miniplug you can see why - there's no room on the plug for another mic channel, just mic, ground, left, right.

When you plug in a mono mic in it hits the top 3 and the tip and I think the top 3 are ground and the tip is mic and it does this through either hard-wired logic or (more likely) software managing the audio chipset. Although as that thread would seem to indicate, that clearly doesn't work in newer models...

Weirdly I was just looking into microphone preamps tonight, although of the balanced XLR in/out variety. So much knowledge to be refreshed from back when I worked with on-site audio studios...

Yep. It's two regular microphones, plus a third under the keyboard. The first is voice input, the other two are for noise cancellation (airborne and keyboard presses, respectively). They're located here.

I love how messing up Siri and breaking noise cancellation are presented as problems instead of positives.
