Hello ,

Please forgive my naive & non tech background ( pre- amble )

I purchased a Mac Mini on 07/15/2019 - new Model ( Part # - MRTT2LL/A

Mac Mini SG 3.0GHZ 6C / 8GB / 256 GB USA

+ AppleCare

( Naive - I did not realize it had Speakers Built In ( it's ok )

My Wife said - Yes it Does - True !

Her Mom has a Mac Mini ( Her second )

** noted - as I am limited to time I can sit ) Knee pain & Back Pain - too long a story & No whining !

As I listened to ( using several browsers & a peripheral DVD / CD player =

Voice audio is So Thin ( best description ) even online Radio - audio of Person on

Local station voice is " not right , Let alone Music sound ( Thin - even a " thump nose )

Mac Mini is Ethernet connected - have 100Mbs connection & speed tests multiple sites are = or > that speed

I hooked up Bose Powered Speakers via trs headphone out ( same result )

I avoid Headphones ( save my ears )

Have not hooked up M- Audio BX5 powered Monitors ( can though )

Have not contacted Apple - Yet

Am I missing some thing rob jobs

Checked Prefereances -

iTunes ( used to be able to set / select a-z sounds Voice / Rock etc

Don't see that option (?)

Is up to date Mohave wise

My prior Mac was a mid 2010 iMac 21.5 inch screen despite saving it via Mac Fan app

Eventually Capur

Any Input - thoughts - ideas Would Be Most Appeciated

Peace

I'm not sure why the Bose Powered Speakers aren't working... have you gone to Sys Prefs>Sound>Output & Bose Powered Speakers is a choice?
Quote:
The internal speakers on the Mac Mini aren't very loud. If you're going to use this device to stream music or watch a lot of videos, I would suggest picking up some external speakers or headphones. The internal speakers are designed for minimal use. Think system alerts and the occasional song.

The built in speaker in a Mini is marginal at best.

BD has the right idea though, verify your output is set correctly.

One thing I like to do, it's just a personal preference really, is to set the internal speaker for alert sounds. That way if the external speakers are off or muted or whatever I still hear the alerts, soft and tinny though it may be.

Yo ,

Thank You ( both) for replies & BD for link to review

Yes Sound Pteferances selected to Bose Speakers & Mac Mini built in / internal testing the difference

I do have AKG & Audio Technica Headphones ( to try ) & Apple Ear plugs (?) too

& M- Audio BX5 Powered Monitors ( in theory Linearly flat ) to be " be adjusted in GarageBand or Mainstage 3

I read the Zednet (?) spelling & noted review - used Apples Logic Pro ( top of line for Sold by Apple

A " deal at (? $199.00 used to be over $1,000 + ( Apple Purchased Logic from a Third party )

Puzzled & disappointed ( as Sound from my iPad (even ) has better audio - voice & music than Mac Mini

( Naive ME - at Apple Store I did not test sound or listen to sound voice or music )

My Bad -

Another theory or more of a thought - ( did I possibly get a defective unit ( I did purchase Apple Care )

I realize Now 1) Should have tested sound at Apple Store & One Home ( My Bad )

& had a two week window to return - has passed - my bad ---

( Unfortunately , my Main Interest is Music - Listening & Creating -

I use A Focusrite 2i2 USB audio interface , a M- Audio 88 Keystation ( for AU - Audio Units in Garage Band - Mainstage V3. X & Abelton Live ( not that great a program or DAW )

& Guitars ( electric - Accoustic & Accoustic Electric + two amps - Vox Pathfinder digital / solid stare

Non reverb model & a 18 watt tube amp - can use Shute SM 57 to mic amps or use Guitar to direct in to audio interface

Share SM 57 can go into audio interface via XLR ins

Plenty of effect pedals , multiple effects & some can be used with keyboards

Yamaha - Casio MT-40 ( oldie but great one 1980 , & more

Guess I know more about music and gear than Computers

Hope is the Best of Things

I Hope

That this can be figured out

Another ( last ? ) Where did the sound settings in iTunes go to ( EQ custom or select i.e. : Rock / etc .

Thank You

Out from America

Remember this Day / Date in History

If no one here has the same model, I'd listen to one in the Apple Store, or make a Genius Bar appointment.

Might open Audio Midi Setup & see if something weird is with KHz or such.

Returned from Apple Store ( re: sound of my Mac Mini ( + I have A Genius Bar Appointment

Tomorrow & 215 pm EST ( Same Apple Store )

Discussed Mac Mini ( brought Receipt ) ** It has ( ONE ) Speaker * At First Reptesenative - said

Mac Mini's Do Not Have Speakers ( sigh - )

He looked Model + Yes They Do - ( One ) unclear if Headphone Out is Stereo ( Accepts a trs plug in )

Representative ( I told him I plug in Bose Powered Speakers ( & sound = voice or music is bad

( sane as with Mac mini speaker -

Same with AKG & Audio Technica headphones too ( to representative

** it was really loud in Apple Store & Lots of Customers -

Listened to a Mac Mini rhere & Sound is better than mine ( but at full volume )

? He said did I purchase Apple Care - Yes - " He stated They will probably swap you out for a new one

(?) Will See -

this may sound delusional or crazy but -

21.5 iMac ( base model ) is $1049.00 pre Apple Education Discount -

May try to upgrade - Doubt it ( Being Sucessful but if do not try never will know

Staff checked " Trade in Value " - Gurss ***

Purchased new in July (15th ) 2019 - Mac mini - $ 1099.00 minus Educational Discount ( $50.00 )

Apple Care - $99.00 minus $10.00 Educational Discount

Trade in Value - $ 220.00. B*** S*** ( Yes I will wash my mouth out with Dove Soap **

Total with Tax = $ 1,314.82

What are the specs on that base model, Apple really sells models deficient in RAM & disk space to suffice for a few updates then you're regretting the base Model.

I missed the ( single ) built in Mac mini speaker ( my Bad )

? Was a bit - surprised today re: Apple Store Employee - first stated - " Mac Mini 's Do not have built in

Speaker (s) ???

I admit I had same thought once Home ( da )

( trs tip - ring - sleeve - headphone jack ( hooking up Bose Powered Speakers - ? ( this sounds silly )

Appears Dual speakers but funky & thin voice ( speaking & music - many genres tried

( is a trs headphone out ? get (?) corrupted or defaulted to mono ?

Too weird but ?

Apple Gemius Bar May prove revealing ( wonder if ifixit has a 2018 Mac mini tear down ( to view - read

Speaker size ( ? One inch circle or ? )

Whining sorry

Will email (?) specs of iMac

Apple Store employees aren't trained like Apple Store employees from yesteryear. They're mainly trained to push you to buy new equipment, or how a technical problem could be solved by buying more equipment, but not about how the hardware actually works and with the bare minimum of troubleshooting knowledge. They used to do repairs in-store, now it's either a product swap or shipped out offsite.

Agree 99% -100 %

It was a bizarre experience to say the least

especially "Mac Mini's do not have speakers " (I admit I thought the same thing at first )

I >? should have replied " Oh that must be it ! "

Going to Genius Bar at 215 pm

?? on Genius Bar Folks ??

Hello ,

Post Mac Genius Bar Appt.

I prior to Appt could reproduce Thin sound ( voice & music )

Hooked up via headphone in / out Bose Powered Speakers - Sound off & same & Thumo ' sound / noise

( can almost keep time too ) same with two sets of Headphones with TRS jacks ( Bose also have a TRS

Jack )

Apple Genius Store was rather Chaotic & Loud ..

Genius Bar Person - who worked with myself and another customer

Ran Diagnostics & listened with " ear buds - wired in ( could not hear thump -

Passed tests -

Showed Me a Zoom view of internals of iMac ( one speaker ? Size of a Quarter max & more like a dime

As Zoom view ( like a Piezo Transducer speaker used in diy projects imo )

Two options - take it home as passed tests (?) it was so loud in Store hard to hear internal speakers

& tech (?) listened via Ear Buds - wired ( I did not *

Option Two - which I chose was a no fee leave Mac Mini for expanded / deeper Testing

24/48 hours ( I emailed DB copy of " Reoort "

Tech said Mac Mini's have one speaker - but Peripheral speakers re: Bose or Headphones - wgich I

Avoid to save my ears & eardrums " Should Reproduce in Stereo " Could not reproduce

Thump : Rythmic sound thru head phone Our to ( ear buds ) I did Prior before going .

So will wait for Call from Apple Store - is close by

My Wife had a very good idea - Test Bose Speakers on Her MacBook Air )0( up in case Bose Speakers - issue

** Sounded Fine **

Who knows *

If get call is Fine ( or issues found ) ** Will ask for Bew Ohe - But fine print & Caveats included

(?)

imo sound not set for internal speaker music etc. but Peripherals should be OK

& Tech Agreed

Will post > Hear anything -
:coffee:
Any Comments - Thoughts - Laughs - Welcome

Guess I bought the incorrect Mac for Music Making & Listening

Mix Magazine does Studio equipment reviews & more than a few use a Mac mini for a portion of

Workflow (?)

Night

Hello ,

Correction - I believe the internal Mac mini ( speaker ) is the size of a US dime ( not a US

Quarter)

I read up on Audio /,Midi ( Apple www ) printed off some also -

" I hope " that my USB audio interface ) Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 - with ( 2 ) inputs 1/4 inch ( line /

Instrument ( Or ) as combo inputs (2) XLR inputs with 48 v ( if needed or have such a microphone )

Further outputs - ( 2 ) L& R Main outs - I have used M- Audio Powered " Monitors (& ) Bose

Powered Speakers .

> on inputs - Microphone 1 or 2 can be used ( XLR in or 1/4 inch jacks )

Guitar or Keyboards can be connected also

My M-Audio Keysation 88 es is USB connected ( & I have a power supply for it &

Other Keyboards ( that would be 1/4 in Yamaha - a ( old but great Casio MT - 40 ) < glad I hung on to

It I have had it since 1981 - have AC Adapter & original manual (+ runs on batteries too )

Has a 1/4 out & headphone out

Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 also has a Headphone out ( with own volume control knob )

Each Input has a Gain Knob too

Other controls ( front ) - each input has Line / Inst ( toggle ) & Direct Monitor ( on/ off ) & a large

Monitor volume knob

While Apple will (?) notice the " thumping sound via peripherals ( ? On internal speaker )

I may / did purchase the wrong Mac but I do Hope & Think their is a Workaround

> Reading Audio / Midi set up +> & Specs on Audio Interface & Keyboards

I Hope

If you get the thump be sure to take as much of your equipment that's hooked up at home as possible... Monitor not likeky practical, but Keyboard, Mouse, Speakers.
