It is such a faithful tribute to the prevailing style of the 80's, it twangs a nostalgic nerve. The dial is wonderful too.

Just one small detail that spoils the concept - push button phones were beginning to replace dials by the late 1970s!!!!

Indeed, but would push buttons imply the same retro-ness? :)

They could if they were the right push buttons.

IMHO:

* It definitely would have had push buttons
* The screen would have been a green-grey twisted nematic LCD, probably with no backlight (I can't remember seeing any EL backlights until the mid-1990s, although they might have been able to cram a conventional CCFL backlight in to the case)
* In 1987 it probably would have used the lines of the Snow White design language, like the Apple IIc and Mac II, etc.
* The color might have been platinum, as shown, but might to go along with the Snow White styling probably would have been lighter.
* The display would have been more square, again, to match the more contemporary design language and better match the LCD's shape (see the shape of the display on the PowerBooks and Macintosh Portable, very shortly after 1987).
* The port on the bottom would have been a mini-din 8 serial port.
* It would have had a removable battery, probably NiCD.
* It would have had a prominent antenna -- see any early cordless phone.

I'd give the rendition low marks overall because to me it demonstrates a generic stereotypical approach that applies design features and anachronisms that we roughly recall from the period, rather than a more insightful application of the emerging and already firmly established trends specific to Apple in 1987. I find it a crude caricature that says more about the designer than something very clever about 1987. I'd be more sympathetic if he placed it in 1984 and used beige...in fact, I still have an Apple Modem 1200 that is slightly reminiscent of this thing, but it was designed in 1983. Styles changed a great deal between the early 80s and mid to late 80s.
