Anybody here using their iPhone to make videos ? I have been a little bit but the sound can be troublesome when I am on the beach or in the mountains because of wind noise. These are nothing serious videos just for family and friends. I need a good cheap external mic that I can attach to the phone and was wondering if anyone had a recommendation. Something that cuts wind noise but won't break the bank.

Is it even possible to use an external microphone? I get the impression that Apple's things are increasingly being designed to be used "as supplied" and unless somebody has developed an app for external microphone use it may not even be possible (so speaks somebody who has only held an iPhone for a few moments in his life).

Even an external microphone may suffer wind noise if it's very windy. Have you experimented making a noise baffle of the kind professional's use? Maybe take a piece of foam rubber?

There are interfaces for mixing boards, and I know there's at least one interface just for professional microphones. But I don't think you'll want to drag around either when you could just opt for a standalone video camera for less than the cost of either and end up with a lot more portability.

Lots of mics out there. Just one example. Check reviews and compatibility (dock connector type/iOS/iPhone) though.

It all depends on budget, but yea, lots of options.

Cheap... if you have 30 pin. :)

There are lots of others out there too, many with a lightening connection.

Thanks guys. I have the 6s plus and will be buying the 7 and it loses the headphone connection so i guess either blue tooth or lighting connector is the new way. I did buy a cheap mic for 6s and it really works great cutting out the wind noise. A must have item because I was having some huge problems with wind noise before I got the mic. By the way the 4k video is amazingly good.
