A few months back when Firefox 50 was released I recall people mentioning some radical changes which kind of deterred me from upgrading. One of them was the new Firefox opening a separate process for every tab. I not infrequently can have 10 tabs open. I have a late 2008 MacBook with 1TB HDD and 8 GB RAM. Even my Firefox 49.0.1 may use 30-50% of one CPU just sitting as the front window, or even spike to 100% if I have a tab opening. It is really CPU I see as the limiting factor, not RAM (I always seem to have a few GB "available"), so I am wondering if I really should stay away from FF50? It isn't unusual for my computer to be running both CPUs to capacity.

FF 51.0.1 here 10.10.5 on 6 GB iMac, 11 tabs in 4 Windows open...

FF 1.98 GB, Compressed 558 MB
FF Web Content 1.32 Gb, Compressed 1.04 GB

Not near as bad as Safari, which seems to use 350 to 510 MB or more per tab as well as 350+ MB Compressed.

I am not clear on what all those numbers mean and how they relate. Just sitting here with 2 tabs open in Firefox. Activity Monitor says it is using 1.21 GB memory and CPU usage is jumping around between 30-50%. I have 2 CPUs so that's 15-25% of my total processing power with one tab open to my email and another to this forum. What I am worried about is if I install a new Firefox and it starts opening a new process for 10 tabs with each using 15% of my processing power (200% total available) then I have nothing left for anything else. As it is if I am doing some other CPU intensive task I can already see FF and the other tasks battling it out and it takes a minute to open a new web page in a new tab. Sure, any upgrade is a bit greedier than the last but if they have restructured it then I am concerned if something radical will happen.

Firefox is not true one process per tab yet, and won't until they purge support for old extensions. Well, at least under the model they decided to use.

I have dozens of tabs open in FF 52.0.2 and only have two Firefox processes running. Each using about 256MB of RAM and 300MB of VM.

What are the tabs open to? Videos maybe?

In the above scenario on mine FF is mostly around 1/10th of 1% when basically inactive, bouncing occasionally up to 60% for very short periods.

Edit: I was going to post an image but can't see how to do it. The Img button just inserts code.

Ugh, this isn't a very elegant process but here's what I see in Mavericks. I was refreshing the tab open to this web site when I shot the CPU window.

Yes, many. Regular extensions (adblockers, privacy things such as Badger and Ghostery), a Greasemonkey script, a couple of CSS scripts, a few plugins. All that said, most of it won't activate unless I am doing something like viewing video which I am not doing right now with only this forum tab and my Gmail account tab open. I'm not running NoScript.

For IMG to to work, they must be uploaded to some online site.

FF 52.0.2: with five or six tabs open, 30+ extensions, real memory ranges between 650-750MB, CPU around 2.5% or less. Also, by not upgrading, you are running vulnerabilities, some critical, that have since been patched.
