I figure this belongs here, 96 MBPs in a rack.

Interesting.

I suppose opening up the units and removing the magnet/sensor so it doesn't know the lid was closed would be cheating?

Thanks mc68k! :)

MB, wouldn't they run hotter with the lid closed?

Slightly, because they've only got them cracked open the tiniest amount, and the air intake is the &*(@#$&*(# keyboard on Apple laptops. It would run hotter but I'm not sure just how much hotter because it's not like it can suck in all that much more air when it's barely cracked open.

"The single largest area on a small to mid-size laptop? I know, let's make that the air intake with nice drainage onto all the internal components!"

They could still leave it cracked open with the sensor removed, it just wouldn't be a requirement nor would measuring the distance be as important (since with the sensor in place it needs to be open over the maximum distance the sensor will trip at).

Sounds like they moved the MDD designers to Laptop design... to see if heat sinks any better in them... maybe when you turn it off the heat is supposed to rise through the Laptop's intake vents to sort of backflush it!

Nice!

I should take a picture of the 50-ish Mac Minis stacked on a shelf over my head poised to brain me when the earthquake comes. I mean, when we talk about the "rise of the machines," well, let me tell you, it's real! They're up there, just waiting for the chance to strike. Of course they're surplus and not plugged in, but they're no less dangerous.

That's a lot of surplus Macs!

Anonymous gets paid in surplus minis. It's a nonstandard unit of currency. :D

It's kind of like Bitcoin, except you end up owning something useful.

They're not mine; they're just waiting above me to pounce. And it looks like there are only 44 of them above me. The other 19 are on a different shelf where they present little immediate danger to life and limb. Maybe the shelf above me wasn't strong enough to hold the others. I don't know.

I'd love to have one, but I'm still trying to recover financially from being poor, and that's a long road, so I doubt I'll get a mini anytime soon. Even if I do get one it won't be one of these since they have to go through the official surplus system for disposal.

Could have squeezed in one more MBP if it was not for the $3000 spent on Apple USB C to Ethernet adapters.

Technically in 2015 USB C was just a twinkle in Apple's engineers eyes.

Now it's everyone's nightmare.

What's worse is that DisplayPort is ensnared in that mess too. I'm REALLY hoping DisplayPort doesn't give up the ghost and move to USB-C only connectors in the end, because multipurpose chips like that introduce a TON of jitter when used for anything other than the singular task you really need to be done (i.e. display management and content protection). Last thing I want is added jitter and latency into my games thank you very much.
