Ran that command, first to enable, then to disable, restarted, and then zapped the PRAM. Let it chime 6 times, for good measure. Won't know if this did any good until a few more reboots, and at least one or two to safe mode.

Didn't last. Right/left clicks got confused again after booting into recovery mode. What fixes this reliably is unplugging USB cable from keyboard to Mini. Trying a different USB port now, but doubt very much that's the solution--no reason to think the port is bad.

Same behavior on safe boot going into different USB port.

From Console "mouse" in search field--no idea what to make of this, or if it's even relevant:

Not entirely sure of this, but think I was logging back in after the safe boot. But clicks got reversed before that at safe boot login window. Think I pulled/replugged cable at the safe boot, when I saw that clicks had been reversed again.

I forget if this has been asked, but if sweet to auto login, is it reversed once booted?

But if it is what happens to the buttons?

Trying to narrow down what where might be the cause.

Buttons work, but clicking (right/left) gets reversed.

Do you have a file like this?

/private/var/db/BootCaches/F741C1C4-048B-4D8B-9763-045EE89EF8E9/app.com.apple.systempreferences.playlist

Can't boot to 10.11, but changing Mouse button in Sys Prefs changes this Boot Cache file in 10.8.5! :o

Thanks. Had great hopes that that cache was somehow a leftover from the iMac clone configuration brought over to the Mini causing this. Trashed it, safe booted, but on return to regular login page, clicks, as usual, were again reversed. Seeing that a new cache was created.

Pulled cable, replugged and immediately things went back to normal. (My "normal" being right=primary, left click=secondary.) Something screwy with USB, but don't know what. No problem at all setting up the Magic Mouse like this on the iMac--but different kettle of fish there, with no USB involved. Might try bringing this mouse over to the iMac to see if it happens there.

Anything untoward here?

I don't see anything wrong there, what all files change if you switch button to left?

Don't think this problem has any relation to what I set in Sys Prefs>Mouse. When this happens, making changes there has zero effect on the reversed clicks.

However, re. your suggestion, maybe see what file changes there are when I pull out the keyboard USB cable and replug--that's what fixes this.

Output of fs_usage -f filesys is microscopic needle in an enormous haystack. What do you suggest to narrow it down to something manageable?

Or maybe something with opensnoop?

fseventer seems to be gone and only available from the usual suspects serving up adware--not sure there's even a version compatible with 10.11.

In that case, although it's not Firefox related, this seems the most appropriate:

So, what else shows up right after changing it?

Working on getting 10.11.6 to boot to see if it even works, or Apple is just in too much of a rush to be bothered with users' wishes.

Looks like that setting is ignored completely here, only thing I couldn't test was if it had to do with Startup Disk setting as whenever I set it to boot from 10.11.6 it'd try booting from the internal 10.8.5 drive… I was thinking Option Boot might use something for another drive.

Have you ever installed, on either the current computer or the one from which the current system was cloned, any drivers for a third party mouse or keyboard, such those sold by Microsoft?

If so, I recommend deleting those kernel extensions and any ancillary files.

Also check the KeyboardLayouts folders in the Library and System/Library for weird layouts (although I doubt you'll find any).

As I said earlier, the iMac from which I made the clone was runniing Magic Prefs (used there only to disable horizontal scrjnjolling) scrolling (wrote this on iPad--can't see anything), which I think I removed completely at the Mini. Pretty certain it adds no kexts, but will take another look. Will check again for any remnants of that program. Think there are no third party kexts other than two or. three which I know about, none of which are mouse or keyboard related--will check again.

Never used a third party mouse or keyboard anywhere.

Alright, that's probably not the problem then. I ran in to a very similar problem recently and a Microsoft keyboard kext was causing it.

I may have gotten lost on the testing here, but to clarify…

After login the setting is respected, before login it is not.

I am not using an Apple KB or Mouse in case that matters.

Thanks BD for trying to help with this. Many would have already given up. :coffee:

To summarize: often, but not always, the clicks I have set are reversed after a safe boot at the new login window. Sometimes (less often than from a safe boot) happens at the new login window after an ordinary restart: Mouse left/right setting gets reversed, and then persists after login. Also, a possibly important clue: pulling the USB cable out of the Mini returns things back to "my normal,"which is, again, right=primary, left=secondary.

What may be confusing is that I started this thread by saying that, at the new login window, I wasn't able to click on anything at all, but that really wasn't the case. Eventually realized that a left click would work for buttons there. Was fooled into thinking that I couldn't select anything, when in fact the mouse setting just got reversed (kept right clicking to select buttons, which did nothing.) Finally discovered quite by chance that left clicking was actually working for those buttons. Remember: I have the clicks set just the opposite of the usual "normal", right for secondary and left for primary.

Per what Anon wrote above, could be that not using an Apple KB or mouse might not be a fair test of this.

Next time it happens, I will see what FAF sees for one minute prior. Will also see what FAF sees just when I pull the USB cable and things return to "my normal."

New information: Opened Console just after pulling and replugging USB cable from keyboard to Mini, which reliably restores my clicking preference. Seems like this could be a smoking gun, but not quite sure what to make of it--seems to suggests hardware. I suppose next thing to try is different keyboard/same mouse (don't have another like this one.)

EDIT: But thinking this over, maybe a red herring: Could be the messages (IO failures) refer to the time when the cable was absent?

Dec 30 18:05:50 **** kernel[0]: 000596.596617 IOUSBHostHIDDevice@26420000,0: IOUSBHostHIDDevice::interruptRetry: resetting device due to IO failures
Dec 30 18:05:50 **** kernel[0]: 000596.596678 IOUSBHostHIDDevice@26430000,0: IOUSBHostHIDDevice::interruptRetry: resetting device due to IO failures
Dec 30 18:05:51 **** kernel[0]: 000596.947896 AppleUSB20KeyboardHub@26400000: AppleUSBHub::deviceRequest: resetting due to persistent errors

Note: tested for this reversed clicking behavior on a 10.8.5 external, to see if it would happen there as well. Safe boot, restarted, clicks stayed according to my settings. But only tried once, so not an exhaustive test. Didn't check the logs there.

And then, since this is safe boot related:

Yep, got same messages after unplugging/replugging again. Guess they're normal. But looks like this "device reset" that happens when the cable is plugged back in is what restores the lost setting.

Back to the drawing board: why is the setting getting lost after a safe boot? Safe boot clears caches. Which cache is getting cleated, then not recreated? Next stop, must look,for some IOUSB cache, eh?
