Most of the discussion threads I read about the release basically come down to people claiming the old Mac Pro sold like gangbusters so that's why NVidia does this, and there's very, very, very, very, very, very few Hackintoshes so there's no chance they're the reason NVidia did this.

Sometimes I wonder if people actually believe this stuff or if they're just trying to distract Apple's legal department.

Look, shiny (dangle dangle), nothing to see here, move along (dangle dangle).

Reason enough for me to get a 1080Ti by any means necessary (short of stealing that is). :)

No matter the reason, it's still excellent news. Good work Nvidia!

Just be aware that for any of the Pascal GPUs that need more than either a single 6-pin connector, two 6-pin connectors, or a single 8-pin connector, you'll need an external PSU to power the card safely. These GPUs do ramp up to full power under load and you risk some hefty damage to your PSU, its connecting lines, or both if you try to use SATA to PCIe adapters. It's been discovered that if you attempt to use both six pin connectors with no external power, the card will boot, but the moment it enters load (e.g. CUDA-Z's "heavy load" button is an easy way to trigger this 100%), the system will kick into protection mode and instantly shut down.

So any 1080 Ti will require external power period. No ifs, ands, or buttplugs about it. Only hackintoshes and eGPU cases are safe with that series running on "built in" power. Same for the Titan X Pascal (Xp).

I was reasonably surprised that the GTX 1050 required no PCIe power, just whatever the motherboard supplies. I think that's the fastest Pascal GPU you can get that runs with that configuration.

Edit: Well, GTX 1050 Ti is faster, and I just found one w/o a PCIe power connector... so 1050 Ti then.
