Anyone have instructions or could point me to somewhere on the net that has a detailed breakdown on how to replace the thermal paste on a G5 quad?

I have access to the Apple service manual but it states that the heatsink and processor should not be separated as Apple considers them as a single unit. As such, there's no info in the service manual detailing separation of the water blocks from the processors.

I'd like to replace what's probably dried up brittle paste with some new Arctic Silver. I'm also having problems doing a thermal calibration; ASD 2.6.3 returns a CPU inlet fan error - check thermal tunnel window or whatever you call it. To me, it seems the fans can't keep the CPU temps low enough to do a proper calibration... even in a basement with ambient temps of 71F. Hence the error...

Finally, CPU pump B just started chugging. I had the quad disconnected and power-off for about a month. Just plugged her back in today and was greeted with a quiet chug... chug... chug... :badteeth:

Be VERY careful with Arctic Silver 5. It is electrically capacitive, unlike more modern, more efficient compounds.

I know japamac no longer responds on Apple's forums, but if all else fails you might try eMailing lmac on this board.

Hello amstel78! Some months back, I wanted to do the same thing with my G4, and spent many a moon researching how to reseat the processor.

If it would be of any help, here's a post on the subject that I wrote back in May of this year; I checked the links and they're all still good. If you learn anything new from your studies, please post back, as materials and techniques are always being improved upon because of the dedicated work of the overclocking community:

At least the G5 processors don't need to be delidded just to cut down on the heat. IVB/IVB-E/Haswell run hot. That's why it's Noctua NH-D14 or Bust for my new rig and why it's going into a case that can support ten fans simultaneously (7 when using two 200mm fans as I'm going to be doing).

Sorry, it's been a while since I've visited this forum. I had the G5 off line for some time and finally decided to plug it back in and it's still chugging. What could cause the chugging noise anyway? It didn't do it when I first bought it this past summer. After letting it sit for several months unused is when the chugging began. Is it a failing pump or is the coolant starting to crystalize?

Edit: Seems CPU B is running about 3*C higher than CPU A now also. :(

Hello,

Sounds like the coolant is evaporating or leaking...

No leaks that I can determine; I've had the unit apart twice to inspect the absorbing pad at the bottom of the case.

I see on eBay several single pump units that I may just purchase. Question is, can I simply swap a dual pump cooler for a single pump cooler without any additional modifications?

Many have notice coolant gone or sludged up without signs of leaks.

I've read of people switching to a single pump, I can't find my notes on that, but as I recall it wasn't a simple matter... maybe something about voltages or wiring!???
