Model Name: eMac
Model Identifier: PowerMac6,4
Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
Processor Speed: 1.42 GHz
Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.9.2f1

I don't remember when I last booted from the internal drive running 10.4.11, but the 2 FW Drives of 10.4.11 & 10.5.8 died, so I had to.

It shuts down all apps, but hangs at the Desktop Picture... standard Panther Aqua Blue, & days later it'll still be hung there.

Booted from 2 older FW drives and it shuts down properly, I think one was even a clone of the internal a few years ago.

Any clues?

Try sudo nvram boot-args="-v" as it will display messages during shutdown as well as boot.

sudo nvram boot-args="" to go back to normal.

Does that work differently than Verbose booting with CMD+v?

Just asking as it'll be a few hours till I'm at the eMac again.

I may be wrong, but I don't think CMD+V displays shutdown messages.

Also, try creating a new user account and only logging into that new account... it might be a userland problem, in which case the problem would disappear if you don't log into that account.

Pull everything from Library/StartupItems. I've seen that happen numerous times with third party crap that didn't want to shut off when it was time.

Forgot to mention, tried several accounts, even a new admin account. Forgot to try my eMac last night! :(

Thanks, another thing to check out. :)

Yeah StartupItems is a good place to check. StartupDaemons should be worthwhile too. There's StartupItems in all three Library folders (/Library, /System/Library, ~/Library), but StartupDaemons are only in /System/Library.

As for not checking, pfft... the places I usually help people usually ends with either the person fixing the problem and disappearing w/o confirmation, or disappearing before anyone even responds because we didn't reply within 15 seconds. You're the one with the problem, whenever you want to solve it is fine by me.

Hmmm, that command didn't work, it looked like it did, but no display of Shutdown, or Startup messages?

Here's the pertinent part of the log after removing IdentD, which is about the same as before removing it...

Sep 4 21:18:38 bdem14 sudo: bd : TTY=ttyp1 ; PWD=/Users/bd ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/sbin/nvram boot-args=-v
Sep 4 21:19:20 bdem14 launchd[149]: com.logmein.logmeinguiagent: exited with exit code: 1
Sep 4 21:19:20 bdem14 launchd[149]: com.logmein.logmeinguiagent: 9 more failures without living at least 60 seconds will cause job removal
Sep 4 21:19:20 bdem14 shutdown: reboot by bd:
Sep 4 21:19:21 bdem14 SystemStarter[471]: authentication service (485) did not complete successfully
Sep 4 21:19:21 bdem14 SystemStarter[471]: IdentD (489) did not complete successfully

Next entry is the startup sequence beginning.

Booting in Verbose Mode, CMD-V should also shut down that way.

Verbose Mode does display in startup, but never gets rid of the GUI on shutdown or restart to the point where I think it would display something. :)

-v won't work, you have to use "-v"

I copied & pasted your command besides typing it 1st time, I was thinking Console log just displayed it differently than entered.

Crud, that sounds familiar.

Sorry, I'm not particularly with it these days, I was in the hospital last week and will be talking to a new doctor this Thursday. Hopefully he gets as freaked out as I am by just how badly they dropped the ball.

Synopsis: Heart condition causes me to go into atrial fib every so many years. This last time instead of returning me to normal sinus they put me on medication to lower my heart rate and (hyperexpensively) thin my blood. So now I'm still in atrial fib, have to sit in bed for 3+ hours for my heart to stop pounding like a jackhammer to sleep every night, can't walk up a flight of stairs without running out of breath, occasionally get dizzy/lightheaded and feel tightness in the chest... basically all the warning signs of a heart attack.

So I'm seeing a (new) doc tomorrow, and if I don't like what he says I'll get a 2nd opinion from a 2nd cardiologist. If this is how they expect me to live, I'm basically screwed, since I can't do my job (I'm not one of those IT guys who only signs up with Fortune500 companies, my kind of IT work involves quite a bit of physical labor) and it's not like the job market has improved since I got this one a few months ago.

But... at least the hospital had good food. Last two hospitals I've been to had good food, it's one of those things you never expect...

Oh man, really sorry to hear you're having all that trouble. I hope they/you find a way to clear this up soon so you can return to a normal life. Sounds like getting a second or third opinion is a good idea. Sometimes these docs, out of habit, just jump into whatever routine they know best, regardless of the actual situation and other, better, possibilities.

Well good news. One of the medications I was put on will, over time, put my heart back into normal rhythm. Currently I'm loping between afib and normal after 7 days on it. It would have been nice if someone at the hospital had told me this though. :o

I found this out while at the doctors office, my pressure was high when I first got there, then dropped 40 points. At first I felt great, but now I feel like I could sleep for 12 hours straight. They're also sending me to a specialist in 2 weeks to start the ball rolling on investigating the sleep apnea front.

Take good care of yourself!

Not to be too self-centered, but you've been a regular and well regarded contributor around here for a long time. We'd all be sad if you couldn't participate as much. A heart-related issue is why we don't see milhouse too often anymore, so like I said, please take good care of yourself. These aren't conditions to ignore or take lightly.

Well, looking back, I can see that each day I felt a little better than the day before, but it was so gradual I can only see it in retrospect.

I really need to move out on my own again, currently my activities (e.g. exercise) are constrained and my diet is less than stellar (for a pair of people who are supposed to be on cardiac diets, they see no problem eating red meat and bacon). Just have to knock out a bunch of stuff first, like stablizing my car, and figuring out how to stop the shrieking harpies (debt collectors).

Nice to hear things have a new perspective. Good luck with the medication. I hope milhouse is doing fine too!

I don’t even know what an “Ralink” is! Nice to know you’ve made some headway with this. I hope all you guys with the health issues are better now. I sort of lost track of milhouse, I sure hope he is doing OK… it would be nice to hear from him again.

Meanwhile, I have an SSD-only G4 (Sonnet Tempo PCI SATA two-channel card, one 16GB SSD, one 32GB SSD) that wouldn’t restart or shutdown, similar symptoms—hanging at the desktop picture. I then on a whim changed the Energy Saving settings to not put the hard drives to sleep. Success!!! Whod’ve known??!?! Meanwhile, this is the snappiest, quickest G4 system I’ve ever owned… of course it’s got one of those lovely overclocked-as-fuck dual 7447A modules with the CPUs running at 1.8GHz and tons of voltage boosting (I ditched the stock cooling and have my own overkill-yet-almost-silent passive cooling setups going on). The beauty is that it boots into OS9 and runs OS9 games like a freakin’ beast. I am getting the itch to pop my Voodoo5 card into this thing and get some Quake 1, Quake 2, and Deus Ex action going on. :g4:
