I have the memory at about 9% and the core a 15%.
What did you have the core at?

My memory is a bit fuzzy but I think I moved from a 250 Mhz to 307 Mhz GPU core which would be a 20% increase (and I think I could have gone higher...). Memory overclocking was pathetic. 200 Mhz and I got to 215 Mhz. I had the core:memory clock speed ratio at 3:2 the hope of gaining an extra 1% performance due to running somewhat synchronously. It was such a small theoretical difference I never was able to even tell with benchmarks.

As for why you didn't see performance gains beyond 9% is simple: performance is limited by the slowest part in the system. For graphics, it is often a card's on board memory that is limiting factor. Mobile systems are further crippled in terms of memory and GPU clock speeds to fit into a low enough powerful.

As for the CPU on a MacBookPro, I wouldn't even bother trying. Overclocking can quickly generate heat and quickly the result would be a pile of molten aluminum on your knees.

Let me know if you find anything for overclocking the CPU and memory.

Well there are several soldering guides online for G4 overclocking...

Indeed, and this is probably the right site if you want help with it. I don't know if the majority of us have done it, but an awful lot of us have. Leopold Porkstacker, presently out of town, has probably done more of it than most of the rest of us combined. Anyway, if you want to try it, we're here. :)

why just 2 weeks ago crammed a D/A dual 533 into a sawtooth and bumped it to 600 the 550 after no joy, it was still a turd and not worth modifying it so the door would close not to mention pressing the good ide pins down thu the motherboard so the dual would fit.

Actually, not overclocking related right now, but I finally got fed up with the craptacular pair of fans that OWC shipped with my dual 7447A CPU module (they're an odd size, smaller than 50mm, larger than 40mm, 25mm thick and still really don't move a hell of a lot of air) that I removed the module, removed the fan mounting shroud, and screwed an 80mm fan directly onto the sink.

Now I can leave the door open for long periods of time while actually using the system, without it spontaneously shutting off with a very very bad smell in the air after 15 minutes of use. I leave it closed almost all the time, but when I'm moving drives around or similar it's a pain in the ass to button it all up just to test if the system is working or not.

I may get brave and put the CPUs back up to 1.6Ghz since I "underclocked" them to 1.47Ghz immediately after getting it in the interest of not having overheat problems (ha - also underclocking is in quotes since they're either 1.33 or 1.42Ghz parts). Oooh, though I'd need to burn that OWC firmware CD that Leo had so much trouble with... if I have to do a CUDA reset the OF configuration would go away and I wouldn't be able to boot into OSX anymore (blech). Wish they would have just documented which OF commands get set, it's not like the CLI scares me...

I haven’t done any overclocking in quite a while, but there was a time when all my Macs were overclocked.

Same here, although getting a Hackintosh has gotten me back into the fun realm of trying to fry my hardware again.

My first over clock http://homepage.mac.com/sandyg3/PhotoAlbum1.html .

I believe it was a 333mhgz g3 zif clocked to 433. I ran it that way for almost 2 years before I finally put a 500mhgz g4 zif in it.
I think there is also a 32meg radeon card in there (overclocked).
The machine is still in the closet and runs great.

But it was never as fast as my 533mhgz voodoo5 powered Power Tower Pro (go power computing). That machine also still works to this day hacked with xpostofactor on 10.2 and dual booting 9.2.2.

I also still have my pizza box 6110 power mac with 366mhz g3 upgrade (nubus slot baby)! (with 9.2.2)

Wow I need to pull all of these out and takes some pictures.

Been running a flashed X800 FireGL in my 2GHz QS, which is currently clocked at 500 MHz (core) and 540 MHz (memory).
The original clocks of the FireGL are 452/490.
The thing ran OK with the OEM cooling (pitiful excuse of a heatsink) but is smooth as hot butter with a ATI Silencer Rev. 5 on it.

When first OC'd, it heated the case so much that I was getting CPU overtemp freezes.
Definitely one that needs better than OEM cooling.

Also run a 9700 Pro (325/310) clocked at 9800 Pro settings (378/337.5).
A Zalman VF900Cu keeps it stable as bedrock.
What started as a momentary lapse in concentration during flashing turned out to be a nice little card for my daughters machine.... :bonk:

Haven't had much luck with 9800 XT's.
Especially with the memory, they are quick to throw pixel errors, especially under load.

Hi jmac!

We were speculating about your identity the other day since, ages ago on the original forum at xlr8yourmac.com there was another member named jmac.

You're running a 2GHz Quicksilver? Wow! Don't see many of those these days. Is that with the Gigadesigns upgrade?

Anyway, :welcome:

Thanks for the welcome Anonymous!

The CPU is a 2GHz 7447A PowerLogix that was a 100MHz model.
Changed the switches, fashioned a heatsink or two, and moved it from a Sawtooth to this QS.

Those shots have a Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB ME in the background.

Now the CPU sports a Scythe Shuriken:

That's a BFG 7800GS OC behind the Shuriken.

My apologies for the slow pages. Gonna' change from iWeb...... someday.

My user name is just a shortened version of my Apple Discussions name, japamac.

Nice tidy mods there. The fin pattern on the first heatsink was kind of weird with a row of fins halfway across the heatsink at a different level. Knowing the two mounting patterns, Intel LGA mount for 775/1156/1366 series processors and the G4, are the same is really useful info.

I've been really wary of G4 CPU upgrades. They seem touchy. I know they work well for a lot of people, but all of them I've personally encountered have been unreliable. I'm still running an old G4 Sawtooth at 450 MHz (overclocked from 400) that had a 1.4 GHz upgrade for a while, but that conked out with non-heat related issues immediately after the card's warranty expired. An acquaintance ran through three replacement cards under warranty before just giving up and buying a used G5. Now I can't remember the brands.

• 350MHz G3 (from a Yosemite) running at 433MHz (in a Gossamer)
• three different 500MHz rated (voltage boosted to 2.5V I think) 7400 G4 ZIFs running at 560MHz, 583MHz, and 600MHz, all in three different Gossamers (of course with beefier heatsinks and fans)
• one 533MHz rated XPC7410 with the voltage boosted to 2.1V, utilising a 40W Peltier cooler, plus a Dremel-modified solid copper Thermaltake Volcano 7 heatsink and fan, running at 709MHz in a Gossamer
• dual 533MHz G4 Digital Audio running at dual 667MHz thanks to a single 40W Peltier cooler, voltage boosting (2.1V once again I think) and a better cooling fan
• two dual 1.25GHz MDD “Quadnostril” G4 towers running at dual 1.42GHz with voltage boosting + copper heatsink + insane earsplitting-loudness cooling fans
• one dual 1.25GHz 7447A running at dual 1.8GHz with the case open unless it’s a hot summer day; all modifications courtesy of Gigadesigns  morons
