Does this sound right?

When I opened Safari for the first time the phone asked for my Apple ID: none of these really apply (unlock your account? maybe that's what I have to do???)
Here's what it says:
"Having trouble signing in? You've come to the right place to reset a forgotten password, unlock you account or recover an apple ID. Enter your apple ID to get started.

(It'll probably PW too, but I didn't put in ID -figured I'd ask first)

Will this happen each time I open a new app? (when I first opened Pages (though it wouldn't do what I hoped) it asked about location services, but I turned it down)

How about Safari settings? I've not used it in such a long time - is there adblock plus for it? any other settings I should fix?
Firefox? That's the browser I use on the desktop and on the MBP we will be traveling with - should I stick with Safari on the iPhone?

Safari settings I got to from HOME/settings - these are default.
I haven’t touched any but I remember from old Safari and FF that there are some I need to turn OFF -and before I figure out how to use Saf.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I began copying the settings and then wondered which one you were wondering about as far as that Apple ID question goes.
There’s a lot here - I stopped and tried to get what I thought you wondered about.

search engine - google
search engine suggestions - green light button on
suggestions - green light button on
quick website - search on
preload top hit - green light button on

about search & privacy:
General:
Passwords -> it asks for me to set one for Settings ???? I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THIS ONE...
Auto fill -
Frequently visited sites - green light button on
lots more options here - I stopped copying them…
last one is Block pop-ups - green light button on

then to
Privacy and security:
Do not track - greenlight button is off WORDING IS STRANGE HERE - THIS SHOULD BE ON? (if I don’t want to be tracked)
Block cookies - allow from website I visit is checked - others aren’t checked - I don’t know how to set these to match similar (but different options) in FF
Fraudulent website warning - green light button on
check for apple pay green light button on - I’ll change it to OFF
(allow websites to check for apple pay.. I’ll change to OFF)
clear history and website data
reading list
use cellular date (green light button on but I’ll be turning it OFF not to use data, esp since I’m on a limited plan, I’m using wifi at home)

Advanced:
website data
japavscript green light - SHOULD BE OFF??
web inspector off

Of course they do - my mistake, I was thinking of java!

Do you think I should just call Applecare for iPhone - I have it and paid for it - and anyway I'm still in the free period and ask them about this Apple ID request when opening safari?

Will do - tomorrow - I have a bunch more questions for them so I'll make it a long call.
I'll let you know what they say.

The support guy was surprised.
Of course, when I opened Safari with him on the phone, the request for Apple ID didn't show up.
I must have hit something else - iCloud? - when I opened Safari?
Anyway, I used Safari without issue and no request.

He did say when I try to change the email addy for "start conversations from..." in iMessages that I'd get that ID request - but I know I wasn't there - though I did go there with him on the phone.

Now - what adblock to install on Safari the phone?
Adblock plus - the one I use on Firefox on the home macs?
https://adblockplus.org/blog/adblock-pl ... -it-s-free

OR is something else recommended?

Thanks.

I don't think that the iphone safari supports adons.

There is a Firefox for the iphone. Let's you sync all your bookmarks from other machines.

I found this:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/adblock ... 71868?mt=8
]which seems to do the trick and it's the same ABP I use as an addon in Firefox.

I couldn't find choices for filters, but it does offer the opportunity to update filters.

Safari on the iPhone sync'ed with the Safari we use on our travel MBP for its bookmarks - limited to the ones we use for travel. So all is good.

I've been fooling around with adding bookmarks and also testing the reading list and reader version for better screen appearance. All new and interesting.
