You may have noticed that the Apple Support Communities has gone downhill in the latest interation. The User Experience was severally impacted. The layout of the content list, thread postings, and reply page is horrendous for folks like me who have a small screen. ASC seem to have been design for a 27" screen. Hiroto, a ASC contributor, has implemented a Cascading Style Sheets to tidy up these web pages for large and small screens. Hiroto has been contributing to the ASC since 2001.

Hiroto's css coding got caught up in the fallout over the controversy of the ACS changes. Apple requests that the changes be tested on a late release of Firefox and Mac OS X. I drafted myself to get the changes tested.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6452806
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6428850

I am looking for folks to test adjustment to the formatting of the Content List and Reply web pages in Apple Support Communities ( ASC ). I am looking for testing in a late version of Firefox in Mac OS X 10.9.

The changes are amazing for small screen users like me. They make the ASC forums useable again.

Tested in these enviroments:

Mac OS X
Firefox 31 in Mac OS X 10.8.5 with screen size 21.5"
Firefox in Mac OS X 10.6
Firefox 24 in Mac OS X 10.5.8
SeaMonkey in Mac OS X 10.5.8
TenFourFox 23 in Mac OS X 10.4.11

Other OS's
Chrome 34 in Windows XP sp3
Firefox 31 in Windows XP sp3
Firefox 26 in Fedora 19

For the css code:
See the attached zip file. Pick the one with the latest date. Should something be wrong with the latest and greatest try the prior one. I recommend you use TextWrangler to view the css source.
http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/

Here is how to let Firefox know about this style sheet.

Stylish supports the the direct importation of css rules.

-- Download and Install:
You need to download stylish in Firefox. Firefox will notice the download and ask you if it is
ok to install.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/stylish/

-- Using Stylish:

firefox > tools > add-ons

click on 'User Styles' in the left column < Yes, they changed the name >.
This will bring up the stylish stuff in the middle of the page.

click on "write new style" button

fill in a name of your user style sheet. I used ACS User styles.

copy and paste in the style sheet you download.

click on preview. Firefox will update displayed pages with new style rules. No need to restart.

click on save when done. This will permanately add the style rules to Firefox and quit the edit.

Enjoy the new ACS web pages.

( Optional. )
To change a style sheet, I find it easier to change in TextWrangler. I feel it's best to user TextWrangler for these changes.
-- make your changes to the css in TextWrangler.
-- copy text in TextWrangler
-- switch to User Styles
-- highlight all
-- delete all text
-- paste text
-- click on preview to see changes.

Background

CSS effects the presentation of data. It moves data around, hides data, changes colors, changes margins, etc. There is the possibility of inserting data, but this sheet doesn't insert data.

Figuring what to write in a css file is difficult but reading isn't so bad.
example:
Code:
/* thread info */
    .jive-thread-info {
        padding: 10px 40px !important;
        margin: 0px !important;
    }

Code:
.jive-thread-info {   -- This is what is to be changed.
        padding: 10px 40px !important;     -- changes inner space around text
                                                       --  !important;   This change has the highest priority.
        margin: 0px !important;          --  changes outer space around object.  "Driving outside the lines"
                                                       -- set to 0 so to nullify.

Thanks, I like the way it looks. Am using it with this suffix /content?filterID=contentstatus[published]~objecttype~objecttype[thread]

This is the full link
https://discussions.apple.com/community ... tentstatus[published]~objecttype~objecttype[thread]

Firefox 31/10.8.5 screen is 21.5" Will try it later on TFF

And this CSS, which highlights unread posts in a different color (uses RGB, which can be set to whatever color you like. Here it's navy blue, with read posts in the default lighter blue.)

.j-td-title strong {color:#191970 !important}

Here's what it looks like in the Snow forum with Hiroto's CSS. I think I will give the link at the Water Cooler. Too bad still doesn't show name of latest poster.

This is without Hiroto's CSS

I got an update from Hiroto that auto scrolls long code listings. Great stuff. So grab the lastest and greated code above. Idea is in this thread.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6452806

By-the-way BD.

I tried to upload a .txt file and the software rejected my text file :?

Is here a way of pointing an image in a post of a png file fhaf I uploaded ? I know I could put the image on a server, but I am lazy.

Bunch of rubish since I am on 10.4.11 and Fedora 19. I'm guess babowa was the complaintant. Oh, we think babowa has seen the light now and accepts css changes.

Too bad still doesn't show name of latest poster.
Not in data.

Robert
PS Be sure to try my latest css sheet. No I haven't changed the color. WIll try out.

Looks like .txt is not allowed, so you'd need to either Copy/Paste like you did or Zip it up.

rc: you should try it with the CSS that highlights unread posts in deeper blue (must be logged in for that) + the /content....suffix I gave above. I've tried your modification and the original. Not sure I see much difference. What is yours supposed to do differently?

Look here at the code post. See how the code post in the pre tag is now in a scrolling box.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6452806

I'm going to have to try all this out more.
I guessed this was what you did, but have not check.
https://discussions.apple.com/content?f ... objecttype[thread]
Question:

The id looks a little short. Should there be more qualifiers? Sure we would only effect list pages?

I'm confused over what I am seeing.

I'm not sure what you changed.

Seem kind of like before.

I'll have to spend more time on this.

That's right. As a full link, it's

https://discussions.apple.com/community ... tentstatus[published]~objecttype~objecttype[thread]

Compared to the straight link, which is

https://discussions.apple.com/commu _os/mac_os_x_v10.6_snow_leopard

Your screenshot looks like what I'm seeing.

EDIT: Looked again. No it doesn't. Try that first link above with your CSS.

.j-td-title strong {color:#191970 !important}

I was wondering about this .j-td-title strong qualifier. It seems short. It going to be valid for every ASC page
@-moz-document
domain(discussions.apple.com),
domain(discussionsjapan.apple.com),
domain(discussionskorea.apple.com)
{
/* highlights unread posts added in v0.6 */
.j-td-title strong {color:#191970 !important}

Anyone intested in testing in Chrome and Safari?

To run in Chrome and Safari, you will need to comment out this code and to use Stylish to set these three domains.

Chrome and Safar Stylishi have an addtion function to set what Domain the changes apply too.

Firefox domain selector needs to be commented out:

/*
@-moz-document
domain(discussions.apple.com),
domain(discussionsjapan.apple.com),
domain(discussionskorea.apple.com)
{
*/

and
comment out the last brace as such:
/* } */

Thanks for your testing.

Robert

I think dark blue and bolding was a little much. I went for dark blue and no bolding.

Wzzz's magic didn't seem to work on my postings. Some other magic works for my, rccharles', list of postings. my unread posts are in dark blue. Well, sort of with asc login my out ever five seconds instead of days before, highlighting is less accurate than before. I looking at a lot of posts without being logged in.
Code:
https://discussions.apple.com/content?filterID=participated~objecttype~objecttype[thread]

Worked here.
This puts my supposedly unread posts in Ipad in Business & Education in dark blue.
Code:
https://discussions.apple.com/community/ipad/ipad_in_business_and_education/content?filterID=contentstatus[published]~objecttype~objecttype[thread]

Whatever the deal changing the colors seems to work for me.

Robert

I've got my 10.9 drive back up, but how can I tell for sure if Stylish is working?

Any lines I can cut out to eliminate theLike & Bookmark columns?

Why wouldn't it be working? Just give it a name and paste all that code into a Write new style window and hit save. Then go to any forum in ASC, using that suffix I gave above.

Also, if logged in, you can use that CSS, which changes the color of unread posts. Without that CSS, there is a slight bolding already, but with it it's much more noticeable. Should look like that screenshot in my post above, viewtopic.php?f=17&t=7061#p88030

@rccharles: The CSS I gave doesn't add any bolding, it just changes the color of text already bolded, using that view.

BD experience a problem with his filesystem for 10.9.

I know. Bold + dark blue was too much for me. You know how it is with multiple chefs...
I changed the code to
Code:
/* highlights in dark blue unread posts when logged in.                               added in v0.6 */
.j-td-title strong {color:#191970 !important; font-weight: normal !important;}

Thanks, very cool. Now that I've seen it, I prefer yours. All along, I didn't like the heaviness of that too bolded text. I can edit CSS a little, but really know zilch about writing it.

Looks at any list. The filters are moved to the right for large screens, above for a list of your posts, or below for communities for small screens. Try the old lime.css to see if priview is working. You need to be sure to delete userContent.css in that funny folder.

BDAqua wrote:

The code for this is commented out. It will appear twice. once for large screen and once for small screen. So find both places and uncomment. I know bad implementaion to have twice. Once we get this version out, I may consolidate the code.

Code:
   /* ------------------
      Hide Like and Bookmark columns in thread list view.
   */                                                            /* added in v0.43 (optional) */
   /* ------------------ (currently commented out)
   .j-browse-details .j-td-likes,
   .j-browse-details .j-td-bookmarks { display: none !important; }
   .j-browse-details > table.j-browse-list > thead.j-rc4 > tr > th + th,
   .j-browse-details > table.j-browse-list > thead.j-rc4 > tr > th + th + th { display: none !important; }
   .j-browse-details > table.j-browse-list > thead.j-rc4 > tr > th + th + th + th { display: table-cell !important; }
   ------------------ */

change to:
Code:
   /* ------------------
      Hide Like and Bookmark columns in thread list view.
   */                                                            /* added in v0.43 (optional) */
   /* ------------------ (currently commented out)  */
   .j-browse-details .j-td-likes,
   .j-browse-details .j-td-bookmarks { display: none !important; }
   .j-browse-details > table.j-browse-list > thead.j-rc4 > tr > th + th,
   .j-browse-details > table.j-browse-list > thead.j-rc4 > tr > th + th + th { display: none !important; }
   .j-browse-details > table.j-browse-list > thead.j-rc4 > tr > th + th + th + th { display: table-cell !important; }
   /* ------------------ */

It's just my vision/memory, I can't tell if it is or not, the earlier one at work eliminates the Like & Bookmark columns so I can tell, it it needs less scrolling because of those 2 worthless columns missing.

Also, I can't find your css W, that thread is off limits or gone. on fiASCo.

Didn't pass Hiroto's muster.

Anyway, the order is wronged I tried to swap them around without luck. I now see two blue columns the two black columns. another project.

If more people were in favor we could get rid off.

What does Wzzz say?

rc: Another thing, are all those numerous sections of that massive 864 lines of code (including the ones commented out) really necessary? What can be dispensed with?

BDAqua wrote:

Which css is mine? If you mean the css for changing the color of unread posts? You should use rccharles', just above. It's far better looking.

If you mean the suffix to use for any ASC forum, it's /content?filterID=contentstatus[published]~objecttype~objecttype[thread] placed after the basic link to any forum.
