Took a stab at ubuntu again the other day. Installed fine, booted up, it decided to mirror my dual monitors. I switched them to side-by-side, and it made me reboot. Rebooted, and it had them swapped- left one was on the right. I dragged one to the right place, and suddenly my mouse was stuck on the screen with no menubar. Force-restarted, logged into a shell, deleted everything even remotely looking like a display preference, logged into my mirrored system, tried again, same problem. Deleted ubuntu.

Ubuntu works well if you the most standard computer ever. If it's less normal, you're likely to hit some miserable problems.

I’ve had the same problem with dual monitors on Windows (XP and Vista, unsure about Windoze 7) systems.

Every other time the computer was restarted, the monitors came up transposed. This was with stock configuration computers (ThinkPad and an HP dual Xeon workstation).
