I'm betting dollars to donuts it is, but few at Apple know about it…

Anything is still available if you know the right person, but of course that's also the rub.

I wonder if Lion Server is actually necessary for this person. For some things it may be, but depending on what kind of server this person is hoping to run it might not be necessary or even helpful. It's certainly not very useful for running a web server, database server, time server, DNS server, or mail server. If the person needs directory integration, Apple's wiki, calendar services (although they're crap), AFP, and a handful of other stuff they may need Server.

Another alternative would be to install a different bootloader that hacks around the 32-bit EFI. These instructions might help, as might this link to a fork of "tiamo's" work that was previously hosted on Google Code (RIP). I make no warranty as to the safety/efficacy of the the EFI hack.

Yeah, I would assume the guy wants to run Server and has a bunch of equipment that lacks a 64-bit EFI. I think File Sharing has a 10-person limit in Lion for both AFP and CIFS connections, so if you want more than 10 people to connect that's pretty useful.

If they need SMB I wonder if Samba would be a reasonable alternative; I think Apple ditched Samba around 10.7 to generally unimpressive results, but I'm not sure how well Samba runs and integrates with 10.7+. But again, if directory integration is required that might not help since it could be a PITA to integrate Samba with OS's OD.

If it were me I'd look really hard at getting a 64-bit EFI compatibility layer running since 10.7 doesn't really stand out as Apple's finest moment.

Yeah, I think it takes luck to find someone at Apple that knows what is really available, I've seen people lucky enough to get Retail Tiger & Leopard long after, years after others reported that Apple had none available anymore… sometimes even for free!
