This model...

Under Specs>More info...
Quote:
FireWire 800 Boot/Startup
FireWire 800

Mac: Intel Macs and some PowerPC Macs running OS 8.6 or later. Please note, pre-2008 Intel Macs and non-Intel Macs will not be able to boot external enclosures that have over 2.2TB support enabled.

Cloned both 10.4.11 & 10.5.8 to it... no boot, just hangs on solid gray screen.

Used 10.5.6 Install Disc & it installed fine to it... no boot, just hangs on solid gray screen.

Both Partitions show up in Sys Prefs>Startup Disk & can be chosen, but... no boot, just hangs on solid gray screen

Booting with Option/alt results in never ending clock hands spinning & no bootable drive at all showing up after a split Internal Raid0 Set. Will not reboot until turned off.

Did same procedure with an old FW/400 drive & it boots fine from those partitions.

Of course I'm going to contact OWC, but what could it be?

System log of last attempted boot from that drive...

Wow, that's interesting. It finds the startup device, loads kernel extensions, then just peters out like the drive is no longer present.

Maybe an APM/MBR/GPT partitioning issue?

"external enclosures that have over 2.2TB support enabled" sounds ominous. I wonder if your enclosure is configured with whatever option they enable there. Sounds like some kind of 512byte sector + 2TB drive limit ceiling they had to work around in the bridge chipset.

Yeah, it just dies on the pure gray screen, then about 3-5 minutes later it'll dim the Monitor's green signal button to prange, then go green button a few seconds later, almost like it's rebooting, but doesn't look like it from the log... unless maybe it did disconnect from the drive!?

It looks like it's using an Apple Partition Map (I think "Apple_partition_scheme" means APM). Try setting it up as GPT instead and see if it's any happier.

I would bet it's a 4K block drive.

Mar 15 17:37:26 localhost kernel[0]: PowerMac11_2_ThermalProfile::end 1

But looks like it's trying to boot a PPC Mac, so shouldn't it boot from APM?

It is a PPC Mac... G5, & I'm sure any new drive uses 4K blocks.

Oh! Good catch. Yes, APM is necessary for Power Macs.

I never figured out if APM has the requisite blank space between 512b sectors so they'd line up on 4K boundaries, at first blush it looked like they didn't but I don't remember finding the starting sector #s for all the various parts of the partition map. If they're divisible by 8 then they'll line up on 4K boundaries (8 * 512b = 4K), but if it's not then...

With GPT the partitions are all divisible by 8, so they wouldn't need blank space. APM isn't divisible by 8 but if they tucked some blank space in there (like 4K drive optimizers do for MBR disks created in older OSes) then it could still line up.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I swear I have a Toshiba drive I ripped out of a USB case and stuffed into a eSATA/FW case that's using 4K blocks and is using APM. It's rather slow but contains my bootable backup in the first partition, and it will boot. I'll check when I get home. I wonder if OWC has their bridge configured for >2.2TB use out of the box?

OK, half hour live chat with OWC fixed it... it was the Big Disk support, gave me permission to break the seal and flip the little red switch inside... BINGO.

They thought I might need to reformat it, but didn't turn out to be so, curiously the 3rd partition did need "Minor Header Repair"..\

I wish there were little red switches on a lot of things you could just flip and fix.

Yeah... I even red about that little red switch in OWC enclosures a year or more ago, forgot about it though.

Whew. At least it wasn't an error at the end of something.

Turns out my Hitachi (not Toshiba, d'oh) drive is actually a 512 byte block 2TB drive. It's so much slower than the Samsung 2TBs I had expected something to be... off...

Error messages I have actually written:
"The year is suspiciously small"
"The year is suspiciously large"
"I'm sorry <user's first name> I'm afraid I can't to do that"
"The month could not be converted to a number. You should never see this error."
"Amount is exceptionally large or small. Dramatic cost changes should be considered in the model rather than adjusted."
"Couldn't make sense of change as a number"
"Number of months didn't make sense"
"Couldn't understand request"
"Amount too high. Maximum adjustment limited to 12 digits."
'Value must be a string or have a "_meta.object_name" property'
'Date type must be either "fiscal" or "calendar". Oddly, it was neither. Please report this error.'

I'm leaning toward "Whoah! That totally should not have happened" and "bummer dude."
