Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

I finally got SheepShaver running with an 8.6 Disc image I have from one of the many OS 7/8/9 CDs I retained over the years (including a 9.0.4 "Repair" CD for G4s only that boots just fine in SS, but won't allow installation because the Mac OS ROM file I'm using is for a Tsunami [9500 class] Mac), and once I figured out that I needed QuickTime 4.1.2 (anything else crashes SS) I was able to load up my DOOM/DOOM2 MIDI files and export them with OS 9's QuickTime synth (which had far FAR better guitars than OS X's crappy synth has while OS X's grand piano is better).

Woohoo! I can finally edit instruments and have the MIDI files' tempo changes respected (MIDI Sheet Music for OS X lets me change instruments, but it royally mangles both music time and tempo if either changes within a single file.

This is one of the very few things I truly miss from OS 9 - the ability to easily edit and export MIDI files to AIFF (and then of course convert to WAV since Android and WinAmp seem to lack AIFF capability...)

Mmm...Breath of Fire 3 music in piano. :D

I think Classic Mac OS pushed itself to the forefront of MIDI and from what I hear Apple got it right. I remember many people praising MIDI on (Classic OS) macs.

For a while there Yamaha was pushing their own MIDI synthesizer plug-in that was superior to everything else. And they gave it away for free. Then they tried charging for it... and then it disappeared.

I actually created a small page for myself when I first got online years back using this synthesizer. I didn't care for its tonal quality at all and found it too "mushy". It also couldn't handle a lot of the MIDI files I threw at it without conversion first.

You mean like reminiscing about the days when I could beat both the arcade and NES versions of Contra on a single life, with no powerups? Or that I can remember my 25 character password for the NES Metal Gear (yes, I actually do remember it in full)? Or maybe pining for the days when I was able to enter the final password for Castlevania 2 NES and turn off the TV and beat the game using only sound.

Yes, I was a video game masochist as a kid. :D
