I need a new SSD for my PowerBook G4.

Initially, I went with an OWC Mercury Legacy Pro SSD. The first one didn't work and they replaced it. The 2nd one worked great for about 2 months and died. I couldn't get it to come up on my PowerBook, PowerMac G5 or a Mac Pro. Dead. They sent me a 3rd one that PowerBook wouldn't see out of the box. It came up on a Mac Pro so I reformatted with Apple Partition Mapping and Extended Journaled. The PowerBook could see it. But partway through cloning from my back-up it just unexpected ejected. It repeated this behaviour when I tried cloning with Carbon Copy on a Mac Pro too. Enough with OWC.

I'd like to hear what combinations are working for other PowerBook users. I'm thinking of trying a Crucial mSATA with IDE adapter. What working solutions are out there? Thanks.

Almost sounds like the problem is on the PB end!?

I can't rule that out but it will boot consistently from the old IDE drive, no problems just slower. I tried different drive cables too.

It will also boot fine from an external firewire back-up drive and works very well otherwise.

I ordered a crucial mSATA SSD and an mSATA-IDE adapter with housing to try.

With my 15" PowerBooks, I could "leave the hood up" as it were since the keyboard ribbon cable to the motherboard was sufficiently long.

On the 17" PowerBook 5,9 this keyboard cable is VERY short. It'd be nice to work on the 5,9 without needing to reattach the keyboard and close up the case each time. Is there a secret service shop extension cable or can I just plug in a USB keyboard?

I'd for sure try the USB KB.

I just finished running AHT on my PowerBook5,9. The extended test finished with no hardware problems detected.

Trouble is, AHT is pretty weak compared to ASD, especially HDD & GPU wise.

Anybody know for sure which ASD is for the last 17" G4 Powerbook?

Oh, did you try running ASD in Open Firmware mode?

G5 Quad can't boot the GUI mode, only OF mode, perhaps the same for a PB of the same period???

ASD 2.6.3 will run on the PowerBook 5,9 but ASD 2.5.8 will not. I initially tried 2.6.3 with an old 15" PB and it didn't work, so mistakenly assumed it wouldn't work for the 5,9 but it does.

I ran ASD 2.6.3 on my 5,9 this morning with 1 loop, and it PASSED.

I was about to try the USB keyboard with my PowerBook open and it's keyboard safely to the side but there's no power button on the newer USB keyboard. Can I power up my PowerBook with it or another way or do I need to reassemble with the PowerBook keyboard attached?
