I just swapped a backlit keyboard from an aluminum 1.5 GHz PowerBook G4 15" a 1.3 GHz PowerBook that didn't originally come with the backlit keyboard. Since the models are basically the same except for the backlighting and speed, the swap is very, very simple. Just swap the top case and the two light sensors under the grills on either side of the machine. Interestingly, if you don't swap the light sensors the keyboard will refuse to recognize that it supports backlighting.

Not all aluminum PowerBook G4 shared the same keyboard, and some didn't have a spot to attach the light sensors, so this swap isn't possible between all such machines. If the model numbers are the same, the swap should work, even if the two computers have different speeds and the recipient didn't originally come with the backlit keyboard.
